The next grey wolf? Gov. Polis signs bill to reintroduce wolverines in Colorado

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics Gov. Jared Polis traveled across the Western Slope on Monday to sign several bills, ranging from issues like highway safety, wildfire mitigation and species conservation. In particular, Polis signed the proposal to reintroduce wolverines to Colorado and the state's wildlife division is to bring 45 of them over three years.  Colorado Parks and Wildlife will introduce 30 female and 15 male wolverines over a three-year period in hopes of boosting the species' population, as only about 300 wolverines remain in the contiguous United States.  READ THE FULL STORY AT COLORADO POLITICS

Wolverine reintroduction legislation is ‘completely opposite’ of Colorado’s ballot–driven wolf plan

By Jason Blevins | Colorado Sun A new predator could be coming to Colorado’s high country but supporters are promising this reintroduction will be different.  Colorado lawmakers have overwhelmingly approved the return of wolverines to Colorado’s alpine landscape, with a plan “that is completely opposite from the wolf reintroduction process,” said Sen. Dylan Roberts, a Democrat from Avon who co-sponsored the legislation with Sen. Perry Will, a Republican from New Castle.  Roberts said the pair’s Senate Bill 171 marks “a responsible way to do wildlife reintroduction.” The bill is heading to Gov. Jared Polis’ desk for final approval. If signed, the effort will mark the first-ever attempt to restore wolverines to a native range.   READ THE FULL STORY AT THE COLORADO SUN...

Legislators push to reintroduce wolverines in Colorado, insisting process unlike wolves

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics The North American wolverine — the animal, not the X-Men character — could return to Colorado. Lawmakers are pushing a proposal to authorize the reintroduction of the animal, maintaining it is a completely different set of circumstances than program that brought back wolves to Colorado. The proponents behind Senate Bill 171 also said wolverines would be less destructive. The bill authorizes the reintroduction contingent upon the federal government designating wolverines as a nonessential "experimental population" under what's called the 10(j) rule.
