King Soopers, 10,000 statewide grocery workers end strike for 100 days to resume bargaining

By Tamara Chuang | The Colorado Sun More than 10,000 supermarket workers involved in a two-week labor walkout will return to their jobs at King Soopers stores Tuesday after the labor union and the Colorado grocery chain reached an agreement late Monday to stop picketing and get back to work.  There’s no new contract yet, but the two sides plan to resume negotiations to work out their differences. They agreed to a “100-day period of labor peace, ensuring negotiations continue in good faith and without further disruptions,” according to King Soopers officials. King Soopers hired line-crossers to keep stores open during strike

By Tamara Chuang | The Colorado Sun As day one of a planned two-week walkout began, about a dozen King Soopers employees were up before dawn on Thursday, pacing in front of their store in Centennial. Some walked the perimeter on the sidewalks as cars passed by. All carried white signs with red lettering asking customers to not patronize their employer. Their union representative with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 forbade them to speak to a reporter, even as one employee questioned why not? Why aren’t they allowed to tell the people why they are outside the store instead of inside? Union officials said they would talk during a news conference later in the day. King Soopers strike will begin Thursday, impacting stores in six counties, Boulder and Louisville

By Bernadette Berdychowski | Colorado Politics, via The Denver Gazette Grocery workers at many King Soopers locations across the Front Range will begin striking on Thursday, the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 announced Monday morning. The strike will begin at all unionized King Soopers stores in Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, and Jefferson counties, as well as stores in Boulder and Louisville. It's still not clear when El Paso and Pueblo county stores will go on strike. In a letter to members posted on Facebook, the union said it may announce strike dates for Colorado Springs and Pueblo in the "coming days."  READ THE FULL STORY AT COLORADO POLITICS

Grocery chains and union workers temporarily extend contract negotiations

By Christa Swanson | CBS Colorado Contracts for union employees at King Soopers and City Market have been extended almost two weeks in a stopgap measure while negotiations continue. United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 President Kim Cordova and the bargaining committee met with representatives from the grocery chains on Jan 3, one day before their contracts were set to expire. The bargaining committee said they accepted an offer to continue negotiation on Jan. 15-16 and a short extension of contracts. Those contracts are now set to expire on Jan. 16. The union said it continues to have concerns about chronic understaffing in the stores and the ability to protect seniority in the scheduling and vacation processes.
