By Mark Hillman | The Gazette Colorado highways are among the worst in the nation. That’s hardly news to anyone who travels across our state. Only two states report a larger share of interstate highways in poorer condition than Colorado. Less-traveled highways in our state are even worse. In 2021, the Democrat-controlled Legislature passed a $5.4 billion package of new “fees” — including a yearly increase in fuel taxes and that irritating 29-cent charge Coloradans pay on every Amazon order — supposedly to boost the transportation budget. By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado The Summit County Sheriff's Office is issuing a warning to Coloradans coming up to the high country to see the changing leaves: park in designated parking spots or pay the price. That's after they issued 33 parking tickets in September, half of that being in the last two weeks while leaf peeping tourism has boomed. Sgt. Mike Schilling with the Summit County Sheriff's Office said it's more than just trying to keep people from parking wherever they please, should they find a good view of some trees. "We respond on the trails all the time ... anything from cardiac arrest to a sprained ankle and really anything in between," Schilling said of emergency medical service providers. By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News For 25 years, a local woman has taken U.S. 285 to Guanella Pass to see the fall leaves, but this year, she said conditions are worse than they’ve ever been. Heather Vigil, a fourth-generation Coloradan, lives in the Fort Logan neighborhood in Denver. Vigil said that for years during the fall, she and her husband would take U.S. 285 to the mountains for autumn picnics and to enjoy the fall colors. They usually take the trip multiple times a year, however, this year’s drive was much different. $5.5M project in Arapahoe County aims to make travel safer for Colorado cyclists

Right now, crews are adding three new roundabouts around sections of Inverness West, Inverness East, and Inverness Boulevard by Dry Creek Road. The Inverness Drive Project is just one step in a very big project. CBS First Alert Traffic Tracker Reporter met with CIP Transporation Engineer Trent Marshall to discuss the project in depth. Marshall tells CBS Colorado it will take a four-lane road and turn it into a two-lane road. It will dedicate those lanes to be street bike lanes. This program will provide bicycle facilities from Denver to Douglas County. The construction started the week of May 27 but the design for this project is two years in the making...

Some upper Rocky Mountain passes will be closed over Memorial Day weekend

By Parker Yamasaki | The Colorado Sun Memorial Day travelers hoping for a long, scenic drive through the Rockies may have to re-route their plans.  Independence Pass, the popular highway that connects Aspen to Twin Lakes and passes beneath four fourteeners, will remain closed through Memorial Day weekend. Its anticipated opening date has been pushed back to June 1.  The pass typically closes on Nov. 7 and “almost always” opens the Thursday before Memorial Day weekend, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation’s website. The highway closed a week early this past winter in anticipation of a storm. The last time Colorado 82 wasn’t open by Memorial Day was in 2020, after several counties requested it stay closed to limit travel during the COVID-19 pandemic. R...

By Jennifer Brown | Colorado Sun Amassive snowstorm that buried Colorado and shut down Interstate 70 stranded travelers overnight, including a ski bus filled with 50 women who were out of water and food after being stuck 16 hours and counting.  “We’re in good spirits,” Mary Wagner, one of the skiers on the bus, told The Colorado Sun on Thursday morning. “But we’re done now.”  For years, the women, many retired or moms with kids in school, have taken the ski bus on Wednesdays. This week, they spent the day at Vail, then got back on the bus at 3:30 p.m. for the ride home. Within 10 minutes, as the snow started to fall, they were stopped on Vail Pass because of a stalled car.
