Krannawitter: It’s time to abandon the old political paradigm of ‘left’ and ‘right’

By Dr. Thomas Krannawitter | Thomas Krannawitter Those of us in the United States who love freedom because we care about human flourishing face the daunting challenge of political and cultural reform. Doing that work well will require clarity in both thought and speech. One adjustment that can help us think better and speak more clearly is to abandon the old political paradigm of “left” and “right”—which has always been nebulous and ill-defined—and replace it with an “up” and “down” model, the top of which represents good citizenship and government protection of natural liberty and private property, while tyranny and total government control over slavish subjects are at the bottom. Krannawitter: Of school shootings, why do record numbers of teenagers have a desire to commit mass murder?

By Thomas Krannawitter | tkrannawitter.substack.com Less than a week ago, on Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, a 15-year-old student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisc., named Natalie Rupnow, opened fire during study hall. Using what appears to be a 9mm pistol, the girl — who reportedly preferred to be called Samantha — attempted to murder as many people as possible. She succeeded in killing a teacher, a fellow student and herself, while wounding several others, some critically. This Substack is not a news outlet. I will not attempt to provide up-to-the-minute developments in this tragic case — that information is readily available elsewhere. Instead, I want to step back and examine the larger cultural and philosophical framework in which such heinous acts increasingly occur:...

Krannawitter: Thankful for the lessons of failure learned by early Americans

By Dr. Thomas L. Krannawitter | Commentary, Thomas Krannawitter Substack The first Pilgrim colonists who arrived in North America in November of 1620 failed in grand ways. Later generations — especially the Founding generation — learned valuable lessons from those failures. We should be thankful the Founders learned from the failures of the Pilgrims and other early colonists. Those same failures also offer important lessons for us, today, if we are willing to learn. Krannawitter: The lessons those most in need of them should learn from election

By Dr. Thomas Krannawitter | Commentary, Thomas Krannawitter The 2024 presidential elections offer many important lessons for political scientists, campaign consultants, partisan activists disguised as journalists, comedians, or professors, and ordinary citizens. It seems many of the people most in need of those lessons refuse to learn them. I, however, am not one to give up easily. I will try to reframe some of the lessons from our recent history-altering elections in ways that might grab the attention of those who are currently staging protests and denouncing those whose votes they desperately want to attract. Krannawitter: Business owners are not guilty

By Thomas L. Krannawitter, Ph.D. | Commentary, tkrannawitter.substack.com The title of this piece is not a verdict in a criminal trial. It is a reminder to business owners experiencing feelings of guilt—those who think they need to “give back,” as if they stole something or committed some wrong simply by running a successful business: You’re not guilty. This may seem obvious to some business owners, yet for far too many, it is not. Every time a successful entrepreneur, investor, business owner, or CEO expresses a desire to donate to a charitable cause in order to “give back,” he is, knowingly or not, implying that he has taken something that does not rightfully belong to him. In a society that values freedom—including free markets for businesses—this mistake might be trivial ...

Krannawitter: The constant in life is Joe Biden and he’s not going anywhere

By THOMAS L. KRANNAWITTER, PH.D. | Commentary, Liberty Lyceum Barring some catastrophic medical or other emergency, Joe Biden won’t be stepping down before the November general election. Even if he experiences some debilitating medical crisis—such as a paralyzing stroke—he might still not step down. Jill Biden shows many signs of being another Edith Wilson. If Edith Wilson—wife of President Woodrow Wilson—could conceal her husband’s stroke and control what information the President received and who was permitted to see him, why can’t Jill Biden? There is, after all, a long tradition of Democratic wives married to Presidents lying about and actively covering up big problems with their husbands. Krannawitter: These self-evident ideals remain true today

By THOMAS L. KRANNAWITTER, PH.D. | Guest Commentator Several years ago, The New York Times launched a new progressive initiative called The 1619 Project. It has been wildly popular and has garnered significant acclaim, turning obscure journalists and writers into DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) celebrities. Materials from The 1619 Project are now being transformed into curricula and distributed to schools across the country, likely including the schools your children attend. The first sentence of the first essay published by The 1619 Project asserts: “Our democracy’s founding ideals were false when they were written.” Happily for Americans and the rest of humanity, The 1619 Project is wrong regarding the most important subject it addresses. For now, let us s...

Krannawitter: Campaign finance reform is to blame for prosecution of Trump

By THOMAS L. KRANNAWITTER, PH.D. | Liberty Lyceum Substack Campaign finance laws—not merely McCain-Feingold—were at the heart of the recent jury conviction of Donald Trump. A more accurate title, therefore, could be: Revenge of Campaign Finance Reform Laws. The essence of campaign finance laws and regulations should be offensive—even outrageous—to self-governing United States citizens. Imagine those in government commanding how and when and whether you spend your own money, and then demanding detailed reports when you do. That’s what campaign finance reform laws are all about: Controlling the many in ways that benefit established, incumbent political elites. Krannawitter: From Decoration Day to Memorial Day, the history of honoring those who gave all

By THOMAS L. KRANNAWITTER, PH.D. | Liberty Lyceum What is now officially Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day, a uniquely American holiday born from the ashes of the America War. The American Civil War raged from 1861 to 1865. The results included death, destruction, and devastation of every kind on scales that had never been witnessed before. After the fires were put out and the dead were buried, veterans who survived the war and other citizens wanted to honor and express appreciation for their fellow citizens who had given “the last full measure of devotion,” in the memorable words Abraham Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg. This included newly-freed former slaves, some of whom were freed by Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, all of whom were freed by the 13th Amendm...

Krannawitter: Are things becoming better or worse for the children of America?

By THOMAS L. KRANNAWITTER, PH.D. | Liberty Lyceum April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, established in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan’s Proclamation 5039. It is fitting, therefore, in this month of April, 2024, to ask some zetetic questions: How are children doing in the United States today? Are things becoming better or worse for the children of America? The United States is now a more progressive regime than ever before. Progressives now control virtually every institution of influence and power. READ THE FULL COMMENTARY AT LIBERTY LYCEUM
