State Senate celebrates 3/3 — a tip of the hat to the original 303 area code — in kickoff of ‘Buy Colorado Week’

By Brian Porter | Rocky Mountain Voice At one time in Colorado, whether you lived in the high country, the flatlands or anywhere in between, your area code was 303. Today, there are five area codes in the state, but Senate Joint Resolution 25-008 passed Monday honors the history of the one area code and of Colorado business. "Today is 3/3, or better yet, 3/03," Democrat Sen. Jeff Bridges said in announcing the bill on the floor Monday. "What day better than today to celebrate Colorado's small businesses." The resolution naming March 3, 2025, as "Buy Colorado Day" and March 3-10 as "Buy Colorado Week" notes the 700,000 small businesses employing 1.2 million and the nine Fortune 500 companies calling the state home. Colorado Bureau of Investigation launches public dashboard to track rape kit backlog

By Óscar Contreras | Denver 7 News The Colorado Bureau of Investigation announced Tuesday it would start publicly tracking its progress to address a rape kit backlog exacerbated by an investigation into one its former forensic scientists accused of mishandling DNA evidence. “We acknowledge it is taking us too long to complete DNA cases. By Seth Boster | The Gazette Colorado Parks and Wildlife's annual big game brochure has been hitting hunters' mailboxes — the annual reminder to start planning for the seasons ahead. The brochure is also available at CPW offices and posted online. And the agency is urging hunters to view it ahead of the primary draw application period, running March 1-April 1. Hunters must purchase a 2025 qualifying license to participate in big-game draws; most qualifying licenses are available starting in March. Fees pertaining to Colorado residents, nonresidents and licenses for various game are outlined in the new brochure, which outlines several changes starting this year. Do just 2 in 5 Colorado fourth graders meet expectations in math?

By Por Jaijongkit | The Colorado Sun Around 42% of fourth graders in public schools tested at or above their grade level in math in standardized testing. Results come from the 2024 National Assessment of Education Progress, administered to fourth and eighth graders once every two years.  The NAEP measures whether students can demonstrate grade-level proficiency and apply their knowledge to real-world situations.  Colorado’s average fourth grade math score was 239 out of 500, compared with the national average of 237. In a letter to the Joint Budget Committee this week, state officials said Colorado will need to spend an additional $73 million on Medicaid this budget year, which ends June 30, as demand for health services continues to surge beyond the administration’s expectations. While no specific date was given, the department said it should be accepting returns some time this week.  The delays stemmed from system updates required to implement a number of recent changes to the sate tax code. Colorado will continue closing coal-fueled electric plants in 2025, all by 2031

By Elyse Apel | The Center Square Colorado is slowly phasing out the last of its coal-fueled electrical power plants, even though they still generated a third of the state’s total in-state energy generation in 2023. The Colorado Department of Labor and Energy reports that 10 coal-fired units remain operational throughout the state. One of those 10 is scheduled to close by the end of this year, with the remaining nine units all set to close by the end of 2031. The department reports that the plants are closing for a “variety of reasons.” “The era of coal in Colorado appears to be ending, and that poses serious challenges to the workers and communities that rely on it,” it states. In a Jan. 27 meeting at the Upper Pine Fire District in Bayfield, county emergency management personnel, regional fire district leadership teams, representatives from multiple counties and state and local officials met to discuss the dysfunctions that could lead to an all-out crisis as the 2025 fire season approaches, because of a huge backlog in getting collective invoices for payment processed. ...

Second Colorado marijuana recall in January hits nearly 60 dispensaries

By Thomas Mitchell | Westword The Colorado Marijuana Enforcement Division has issued a health and safety notice over mold and yeast concerns for marijuana grown by Medpharm Holdings, LLC, which does business as cultivator Bud & Mary's. The recall, issued January 28, includes nine different harvest batches and impacts 58 dispensaries across Colorado. According to the MED, the flagged product was sold from February 7 through December 20 of last year. After testing marijuana from Bud & Mary's, some harvest batches were "found to have exceeded acceptable limits established for total yeast and mold," the MED notice says.
