Solution to Aurora’s TdA gang problem was presented in bill Democrats killed, Rep. Holtorf says

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A measure which could potentially have preempted the arrival of violent Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua in Aurora, Denver and other locations of the state was never given a chance by Democrats, state Rep. Richard Holtorf, R-Akron, says. He authored House Bill 24-1128, with the support of Sen. Mark Baisley, and an 8-3 party-line committee vote in the 74th Legislature prevented it from ever reaching the floor for debate. "They wholeheartedly rejected it on principle, a bad, progressive principle of open borders," Holtorf said. The bill sought to return Colorado to immigration policy prior to 2013, when Senate Bill 06-090 was in place. Doing so would have eliminated present law prohibiting a probation officer from providing personal inf...

If the chairman were to be removed, who leads the Colorado GOP? These three say they can

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice BRIGHTON -- If the Central Committee were to clean house at Colorado Republican Party headquarters and remove all state officers, as has been proposed by a faction of the committee, who might assume leadership? A non-meeting "rally" at Faith Fellowship Church here on Saturday, July 27, may have begun to answer that question. In fact, a couple committee members in attendance proposed they had found all three officers -- those candidates to become chairman who stayed to participate in an impromptu question-and-answer session. Those candidates were Eli Bremer, Richard Holtorf and Brita Horn. Also seeking the chairmanship is Steven Peck. "I would argue I might not make a very good secretary, if you look at my notes today," Holtorf joked with the ...

In waning hours of campaign, one 4th District candidate faced water, fire emergencies

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The final days and even hours of a campaign can sometimes mean the difference between winning and losing, but for one 4th District candidate for Congress the past days have brought more important battles. Instead of knocking doors, meeting with supporters or other activities that would have helped his campaign, Richard Holtorf spent Sunday coming to the rescue on Buffalo Springs Ranch, where he operates a cattle feeder operation. The water table dropped and the pasture wells were not pumping water, Holtorf's campaign manager Rhonda Brandt explained to The Independent. It is the type of emergency that farmers and ranchers through the rural portion of the district face. Then the problem became worse on Monday. "Richard was working to rest...

In Boebert-less 4th District debate, Republican Rumble still centered on Boebert

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice DENVER -- A brief heated exchange between Deborah Flora and Richard Holtorf highlighted what otherwise was a 4th District congressional debate which seemed to center on everything but those appearing on stage Saturday during the Republican Rumble here at the Grizzly Rose. Lauren Boebert chose not to attend the Republican Rumble debate, and instead focus her final weekend prior to ballots being received on campaigning. Yet, she was the focus of the first question of the debate when candidates were asked to consider differences between them and the top-line candidate on the ballot. "We hear a whole bunch of rhetoric that doesn't actually discuss results," said Mike Lynch, adding criticism of Boebert's move from the 3rd to the 4th District, aski...

‘Rigged from the beginning’: Candidates for 4th District express deep concerns with Trump verdict

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice It is a largely rural area of Colorado, where cattle outnumber voters and where Donald Trump won by an 18.6% margin in his second bid for the presidency in 2020. One pollster termed the 4th District "MAGA Country", for the area's affinity toward the 45th President of the United States. In rural areas of the district, semi-truck trailers in numerous communities are retired to fields and painted in tribute to Donald Trump, and it is not uncommon to see a pop-up corner market of MAGA merchandise for sale on a weekend near busy intersections in places like Fort Morgan. Whether rural or urban, there's not a significant difference in Republican opinion toward the former President in the district. So, it may come as little surprise Republican can...

Rep. Holtorf details the ‘good, bad and ugly’ of state legislative session

By Rocky Mountain Voice Staff State Rep. Richard Holtorf, the whip of the Colorado House's Republican Conference, offered review of the recently closed Colorado legislative session in a press statement this week. “My last year in the state legislature had ‘some good, some bad, and some ugly'," he said. "I am immensely proud of the work I’ve done serving on the Colorado House Agriculture, Water & Natural Resources, and Health & Human Services committees. I would like to thank my family, ranch hands, legislative aids, colleagues, and most of all voters, who helped me serve 16 of the 21 counties in [Colorado's 4th District] over the past five years.” He was first appointed to serve out the completion of Kimmy Lewis' term in central and southeast Colorado, and then was elected...

Bill declaring Women Veterans Appreciation Day on June 12 headed to Gov. Polis

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A bill led by Eastern Colorado legislators will declare a Women Veterans Appreciation Day, if signed into law by Gov. Jared Polis. House Bill 1236 cleared the Senate State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee without objection last week and Monday earned unanimous support of the Colorado Senate. "There's a lot of reasons why we need to celebrate women veterans," said Sen. Byron Pelton, a co-prime sponsor of the legislation in the Colorado Senate. "Being a veteran myself, I know the difference of treatment of myself and those I served with that happen to be female." The bill establishes June 12 as Women Veterans Appreciation Day in Colorado. The other prime sponsors of the bill were Rep. Richard Holtorf and Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer. Th...

Holtorf celebrates drawing second-line place on 4th District Republican primary ballot

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice District 63 State Rep. Richard Holtorf, R-Akron, will appear second on the Republican Party's 4th Congressional District primary ballot, immediately following 3rd District U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, he announced Friday. He won a lottery drawing for the position among qualified candidates on the congressional ballot to replace ex-Congressman Ken Buck, following top-line candidate Lauren Boebert. Holtorf earned 15.4% of the delegate vote at the 4th District Assembly in early April and his certification of 1,866 signatures allowed him to advance onto the ballot through the hybrid method. Boebert qualified for the top line on the ballot by taking 40% of the delegate vote at assembly, the highest total among the four attending candidates, and a...

Do only four frontrunners remain in 4th District race? It appeared that way in Kit Carson County.

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice BURLINGTON -- A handful of candidates vying to become Eastern Colorado's next representative to Congress didn't make one of the state's bright, bright red counties a destination here Friday for the Kit Carson County Republican Party's Lincoln Dinner. The county situated on the Kansas border has delivered decisive, state-leading vote-count margins for Republican candidates for President, most recently giving Donald Trump 80% of the vote in both 2016 and 2020, supporting Mitt Romney with 75% support and John McCain with 66% respectively in 2012 and 2008, and George W. Bush with 72% support in his first run and 77% in his bid for re-election. In his final election, Rep. Ken Buck earned 85% of all votes from the county. In Burlington on Frida...
