Colorado Springs has been debating for months about whether to begin allowing battery and electric-powered bikes onto trails that are reserved for non-motorized vehicles through the city Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) program. During the public comment period of Tuesday's City Council meeting, prominent former council members Richard Skorman and Wayne Williams said that any change to the voter-enacted TOPS program is required to be made by a ballot measure. In future, one of state’s largest off-leash dog parks could require out-of-town visitors to pay

By Monte Whaley | Westminster Window One of the state’s largest off-leash dog parks will likely stay intact but Westminster should do more to make the 470-acre parcel self-sustaining, including charging out-of-town visitors a fee to use the area, a majority of city councilors said Monday night. Councilors said at the work session that they wanted to keep the off-leash area as-is. This is despite a city staff recommendation to cut the parcel roughly in half or more to increase open space in the city. Kelty | Westword After four decades of buying enormous tracts of land west of Arvada, Jefferson County is considering new hiking trails in an unblemished area less than thirty miles from downtown Denver. Property owners in the private community located right next to the proposed trailhead aren't keen on the idea, however. "I'm not afraid to say not in my backyard. They're talking about endangering myself and my family," says Steve Bisque, the president of the Blue Mountain Land & Homeowners Association and a member of the family that developed the neighborhood. By Seth Boster | Out There Colorado The nonprofit leader in building and maintaining trails on Colorado's highest peaks enters the field season with plans to progress on an unprecedented project. Colorado Fourteeners Initiative is celebrating 30 years this summer. Mount Shavano represents "the most massive project that CFI has ever undertaken," the organization's executive director, Lloyd Athearn, has said. Eight years ago, CFI bought 41 acres of old mining claims around the Chaffee County summit. That was ahead of work that began in 2021 to build new trail along the route deemed to be among the most environmentally damaging and unfriendly to hikers across the state's fourteeners. Alterra Mountain Company, known for their popular 'Ikon Pass,' will purchase the popular slopesport destination, with the deal set to close later in 2024. The deal is subject to closing conditions, which include regulatory approvals. According to a press release on the matter, COO of Arapahoe Basin Al Henceroth will continue his role at the ski area.
