Texas Gov Abbott threatens to defund hospital over medicaid citizenship law dispute

By David Krayden | The Post Millennial Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) is threatening to defund a children’s hospital after a Houston doctor released a video on TikTok telling patients to ignore a new state law requiring they reveal their citizenship when getting treatment. Abbott issued an executive order that took effect on Nov. 1 requiring hospitals accepting Medicaid or Children’s Health Insurance Plan payments to ask patients if they are citizens of the US on intake forms. The department that runs Colorado’s Medicaid program overshot its budget for the most recent fiscal year by more than $120 million after underestimating how sick its members would be. Medicaid rolls were in flux over the last year as states started removing people for the first time since early 2020. During the COVID-19 public health emergency, states couldn’t kick people off Medicaid, meaning they spent much of the last year determining who still qualifies.
