In letter to Mayor Mike Johnston, Denver restaurants say they’re now watching downtown ‘fall completely apart’

By Bernadette Berdychowski | The Denver Gazette Several Denver restaurants said they are at a boiling point with the state of downtown. In a letter to Mayor Mike Johnston and city leaders sent last week, Dave Query, owner of Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar, expressed frustrations with the mayor, noting he had promised on the campaign trial to turn downtown around. Several other major restaurateurs in downtown Denver signed on to Query's letter, including owners from Illegal Pete’s, ChoLon Restaurant Concepts and Union Station’s restaurant operators. Rep. Evans will join House Oversight Committee questioning Denver mayor on sanctuary policies

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice When Mike Johnston arrives in March to offer his testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, the Denver mayor might recognize a member of the panel questioning him. U.S. Rep. Gabe Evans, a Weld County resident, has been authorized, presumably by Chairman James Comer, to waive onto the committee to question Johnston, and potentially the mayors of Boston, Chicago and New York City. Rep. Comer, in his capacity as chairman of the committee, announced Wednesday that Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and New York City Mayor Eric Adams would join Johnston on the March 5 panel investigating the policies of sanctuary cities and their impact on public safety and federal immigration enforcement. He has...

Housing, homelessness, public safety among Denver mayor’s 2025 priorities

By Noah Festenstein | The Denver Gazette Painting a city gripped by worries over deportations, high cost of living and economic struggles, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston on Wednesday unveiled his goals for the year, saying he will focus on resolving familiar challenges — housing, homelessness and safety.   “I want to make sure people see how serious we know the stakes are," Johnston said at the newly upgraded Denver Central Library. “There are folks in the city today who are very, very afraid,” he said. “Whether that is worry about them or their family members being caught up in mass deportations, whether that is someone who is fighting hard to make sure they can still pay the rent this month, someone who's trying to keep their small business going and they're strugglin...

She worked for Denver for 20 years. Now she’s suing Mayor Mike Johnston’s office and his chief equity officer

By Kyle Harris | Denverite A City of Denver employee is suing the Mayor’s Office and the Mayor’s Chief Equity Officer. Jessica Calderon’s allegations include sex and national-origin discrimination, retaliation and violations of her constitutional rights to free expression and assembly.  She filed the complaint in August and her attorneys amended it this week. It addresses several years of grievances that span the administrations of former mayor Michael Hancock and Mayor Mike Johnston. The Denver City Attorney’s Office declined to comment on the complaint, and neither the Mayor’s Office nor Chief Equity Officer Ben Sanders have responded to Denverite’s requests for comment on the allegations.  READ THE FULL STORY AT DENVERITE

Kalam: Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s insurrection rhetoric

By Ahnaf Kalam | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice In the wake of the recent electoral landslide — a decisive repudiation of unchecked illegal immigration and the catastrophic security failures at America’s borders — one might have expected local leaders to reconsider their stances on sanctuary city policies. Yet, in Denver, Mayor Mike Johnston has chosen defiance over reason, doubling down on policies that disregard the will of his constituents and the authority of the federal government. His response to President-elect Trump’s nomination of Tom Homan as "border czar" is nothing short of insurrectionary. Mayor Johnston took to social media to unveil a bold, but deeply troubling plan to block any federal efforts to deport illegal immigrants in Denver. He went so far as to cla...

‘Like Tiananmen square’: Denver mayor vows city police, population will forcibly resist Trump deportation measures

By Christian Baldwin | The Daily Caller Democrat Denver Mayor Mike Johnston vowed that his city’s police and population would resist President-elect Donald Trump’s deportation agenda in an interview Tuesday with the Denverite while comparing Trump and federal deportations to the Chinese Communist Party.  “Absolutely not,” Johnston said when asked about whether his office would allow the Denver Police Department (DPD) to cooperate with future Trump administration deportation measures. “We won’t do it.”   Johnston proposed that local law enforcement could be used to block any attempts by the incoming Trump administration to enforce U.S. immigration law. He also suggested that the city’s population would come out in force to interfere with federal immigration enforcement officer...
