‘We’re freedom-loving Americans,’ former Sen. Lundberg said after Larimer Co. GOP meeting protested

By Brian Porter | Rocky Mountain Voice It quite possibly is the strangest conversation former Colorado Sen. Kevin Lundberg has had in a while. As he walked into the Larimer County Republican Party monthly meeting last week, Lundberg briefly stopped at the door to engage with protesters to the meeting he was about to attend. "There were 8-10 people holding signs," he said, retelling the story during his weekly call with grassroots conservatives. "I greeted them pleasantly." One protester was holding a sign which read, "please support the Constitution," which struck Lundberg as odd. The protestors were being allowed their First Amendment freedom to assemble at the entry to the meeting. He responded to that protester that he agreed, and it was a reason he was going in to do the...

March for Tina Peters is Saturday, March 1, in Fort Collins

By Jen Schumann | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice Tina Peters, formerly the Mesa County clerk and recorder, rose to notoriety for her stance on election integrity, after facilitating a forensic image of Mesa County’s election management system prior to a ‘Trusted Build’ by the Colorado secretary of state. In October 2024, Tina Peters was handed a nine-year prison sentence following a conviction on seven charges, including three felonies, for attempting to influence a public servant, one for conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and misdemeanors for official misconduct, duty violation and noncompliance with the secretary of state. Peters is currently serving her sentence in the Larimer County jail. Her backers are uniting for a show of support, hoping for justice...

In a shifting of chairs, Republican parties have new leadership in many Colorado counties

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The only constant in life is said to be change. That certainly is the way it may feel for those in a number of county Republican parties around Colorado. From El Paso to Weld to Washington counties and other places dotting the map, new party leadership has been put in place during biennial reorganization, and more could be. In Adams County, both U.S. Reps. Lauren Boebert and Gabe Evans spoke before Laura Garcia-Pascoe was elected as the new county Republican chairwoman. "Let’s win big together this cycle," wrote Boebert in a Facebook post and photo with Garcia-Pascoe, after her election. On Monday, during his weekly grassroots call, former Sen. Kevin Lundberg noted Sandra Aste had been named the Larimer County chair. "I am really exc...

In Larimer County, sheriff and DA at odds over claims DA doesn’t properly prosecute child predators

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Two of Larimer County's top law enforcement officials are at odds over how the Colorado county's district attorney's office is prosecuting suspects of some crimes. Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen, a Republican, has publicly criticized District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin, a Democrat, of letting at least one sex offender suspect off easy from prosecution. McLaughlin denies the accusations, claiming they are politically fueled. In recent weeks the Larimer County Sheriff's Office has released some press releases calling out McLaughlin's office for allegedly letting criminals off easy compared to the charges they initially faced. One of the main cases highlighted by LCSO involved a man who was arrested for trying to pay $450 to have sexual relations wi...

If you live in Denver, Larimer counties, you can expect marathon ballots to vote

By Sherrie Peif | Complete Colorado Depending on where you live in Colorado, the 2024 election ballot may seem like you just sat down to start a new novel, with a storyline that hikes taxes and debt,  makes changes to city and county charters, bans “trophy” hunting of mountain lions when it’s already illegal, and allows government employees to collectively bargain, among myriad other things. Indeed, if 14 statewide ballot measures and a near like amount of judicial retention questions aren’t enough, many cities, towns, counties, school districts and other special taxing districts have piled on their own measures, making some ballots — such as Denver’s — as much as six pages long. Complete Colorado looked at a few of the local ballots around the state, incl...

Former Larimer County chief district attorney pleads guilty to sexual assault of court intern

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado A former chief district attorney in Larimer County has pleaded guilty to sexual assault after a former intern came forward to police. Dan Quinn, who served in the Larimer County District Attorney's Office in the late 1990s, was charged with having sexual relations with a county intern years before she turned 18. As part of a plea agreement to avoid jail time, Quinn pleaded guilty Friday afternoon to one charge of sexual assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor. Before the plea agreement was reached, Quinn was being charged with sexual assault of a child by a person in a position of trust. Before a judge, Friday, Quinn and his attorney went out of their way to notify the court they were admitting guilt to the charge of sexual assault but not to the...

Larimer County veteran, injured twice by explosives 54 years ago in Vietnam, receives Purple Heart

By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado More than 50 years after being injured in the Vietnam War, a Larimer County veteran received one of the armed service's most distinguished medals -- the Purple Heart.  U.S. House Assistant Minority Leader Joe Neguse presented the veteran with the long overdue honor at an emotional ceremony. For Carl Smith, it is the final leg of a decades-long journey that took him to the jungles of Vietnam, where he was injured twice by explosives, making him eligible for the Purple Heart. It is an honor he should have received 54 years ago but, the military couldn't find his medical records. Congressman Neguse found the medic who treated him instead and set the record straight. Neguse called Smith a local hero, "Whose courage under fire and willingness to ser...

Larimer Co. assessor says 51 homes were damaged or lost in Alexander Mountain fire

By BizWest The Larimer County assessor has completed a report of property damage caused by the Alexander Mountain Fire. The report, completed Sunday, shows that 51 homes were recorded as damaged or lost. Property owners impacted by the fire could see their property values reduced, resulting in their taxes being lowered, as they recover, repair or rebuild, according to a news release from the assessor’s office. “In the months ahead, my office will continue to study damages in the Alexander Fire burn scar for any valuation adjustments on impacted properties,” Larimer County Assessor Bob Overbeck said in a prepared statement. “We’ll also be there to assist homeowners while they rebuild.” READ THE FULL STORY AT BIZWEST
