Senate passes Laken Riley act after Trump’s inauguration

By Henry Rodgers | Daily Caller The U.S. Senate voted Monday to pass the Laken Riley Act, just hours after President Donald Trump was sworn in. The bill would require federal immigration authorities to detain illegal migrants who commit theft-related crimes in the U.S. The legislation would also allow states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for harm caused to their residents because of illegal immigration. Jose Ibarra, 26, was found guilty on 10 charges, including murder, kidnapping, and aggravated assault with intent to rape Riley, who was found murdered after she went jogging at the University of Georgia in Athens, the New York Post reported. Ibarra had previously waived his right to a jury trial, so the verdict came from Judge Patrick Haggard during a bench trial. By Nicole Silverio | Daily Signal Jose Ibarra, the alleged murderer of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley, traveled from New York City to Georgia after requesting a humanitarian flight, his roommate testified Monday. Ibarra is currently standing trial after being charged for the murder of Riley, who died in February from blunt force trauma to the head outside of the University of Georgia’s campus. Ibarra’s roommate, Rosbeli Elisber Flores-Bello, testified that she and the suspected murderer arrived at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City and requested a humanitarian flight to Athens, Georgia, in September 2023. “In Manhattan, we requested a humanitarian flight to come here to Atlanta,” Flores-Bello said when asked how they arrived in Georgia. ...

Sen. Josh Hawley, Missouri Republican, read key parts of the file into the record at a Senate hearing Thursday. Jose Ibarra, the man charged with the Feb. 22 slaying, was released under Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ power of parole, which is supposed to be used in limited cases and only when there is an urgent humanitarian need or a significant benefit to the public.
