By Kevin Lundberg | Guest Columnist, Rocky Mountain Voice As chairman for the Colorado GOP lawsuit committee, following is an update on the progress of our case challenging the semi-open primary in federal court.  Our contention is that political parties, being a private organization, should not be required to allow non-party members to vote in that party’s elections, selecting their nominee for general elections. This legal standard was actually established by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Jones case in 2000. In 2021, the State Republican Central Committee unanimously approved a resolution calling for a legal challenge of Prop. 108. I haven’t kept exact records, but that amounts to more than 15,000 bills and resolutions. From that perspective, I have the following observations about the current crop of bills we have already seen this year. The legislators’ remarks were somewhat predictable, talking about unity and cooperation — a good place to start, but more lip service than reality.  The Republican minority leaders, to their credit, also spoke up for the people of Colorado. They emphasized the government policies that have driven up the cost of living to impossible levels for far too many families. By Kevin Lundberg | Guest Commentary, Rocky Mountain Voice With the start of 2025, several new laws and regulations become effective for the people of Colorado.  There will now be a requirement (SB24-065) that a driver of any age must use a hands-free system to make calls while driving. With the almost constant use of smartphones in everyday life, my guess is virtually everyone subject to these rules will be violating this law from time to time. In 2020, HB20-1343 set January 1, 2025, as the date requiring new caging systems for Colorado's large egg producers. This unrealistic rule for chickens is, so to speak, coming home to roost. But, when the shoe is on the other foot and Secretary of State Griswold (SOS) is caught publicly exposing more than 600 complete BIOS passwords of election machines from all across Colorado and kept it a secret for several days right before the election, it becomes an honest mistake and no big deal.
