Jeffco Schools considering closure that would send students to Everitt M.S., Wheat Ridge H.S.

Jeffco Public Schools is hosting a series of community meetings to determine the future of Jefferson Junior/Senior High School in Edgewater. The district is proposing closing the school, which serves grades 7-12, starting in the 2026-2027 school year. Students would instead attend Everitt Middle School and Wheat Ridge High School. Jeffco Public Schools is proposing new uses for the building. At the same time, administrators said they are working to strengthen student safety. Jeffco Board of Education President Mary Parker released a letter Tuesday about recent board actions regarding the investigation’s circumstances. Jeffco Schools officials said they conducted an early dismissal at 11:15 a.m. as a precaution. They said the school was made aware of a threat made by a student directed at the school. Authorities advised parents that there is construction along West 32nd Avenue right outside of the high school and asked that they drive up Holland Street from West 38th Avenue to pick up students. By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Two weeks after ex-Jefferson County Chief of Schools David Weiss was terminated, he is believed to have committed suicide, Fox 31 News is reporting. He was found dead following allegations he had been in possession of child sexual assault material. Weiss was terminated Dec. 19 during an investigation. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating Weiss, Fox 31 News reported. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was contacted by the Washington, Md., Sheriff's Office on New Year's Day that a death investigation into Weiss was taking place, Fox 31 reported. The town said in a press release that the board of trustees was in the process of adopting its 2025 budget. “Due to various financial concerns, the adopted budget results in a reduction in the Town’s Police Department. The district is under financial strain and in the spring considered asking voters to approve a mill levy override this year, but consultants recommended putting it off.
