Governor Jared Polis Leaves Colorado Lawmakers Confused with Mixed Messages on His Tax Policy

SOURCE: THELOBBY-CO.COM During his recent State of the State address, Governor Jared Polis presented an ambitious agenda for massive government spending on public transit, education, job training, and crime fighting. However, he surprised many by emphatically calling once again for an income tax cut that would primarily benefit the upper middle class. This unexpected stance challenged the Democratic majority. The Governor’s proposal highlights the confusion and division within the tax and spend Democrat Party. At the core of the debate is Colorado's tax system, which underwent a significant change in 1987 when the state legislature implemented a regressive flat tax, taxing all income at the same rate. This change was further solidified in 1992 with the passage of the Taxpay...

Eastern Plains was ignored by disaster declaration, legislator says

When a disaster declaration was issued by Gov. Jared Polis, related to extreme winter weather conditions, it failed to recognize the impacts on communities and residents of the Eastern Plains, a letter authored by Southeast Colorado Republican Rep. Ty Winter reads. The same storm system which impacted residents in other areas of the state dumped heavy snow on the sparsely populated Eastern Plains and stretched resources to their extent, the letter indicates. “Over the last 10 days, the Eastern Plains in Colorado have endured severe weather and blizzard conditions. Colorado’s farmers, livestock producers and rural families were faced with single-digit, below-zero temperatures, and other life-threatening conditions,” a letter from four legislators begins. The letter, dated Jan. 12, ...

Polis declares cold weather a disaster, then goes skiing

SOURCE: Colorado Peak Politics It’s winter in Colorado, which means global warming is on vacation and it can get wicked cold outside. Temperatures are supposed to drop below zero in the Denver region this weekend, forcing Gov. Polis to multi-task his media hits. First up is a disaster declaration that it’s going to get really cold outside. The Denver Gazette  sums it up: Those in the cold snap area should avoid staying outside for extended periods of time, leaving animals outside and using stoves, barbecues and ovens heat your homes. These heating tools can create a significant risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to a public health advisory from the Douglas County Health Department. From Polis’s order: Avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor activities. ...

Governor Polis Boasts About Leading the Nation in Psychedelics, Continuing to Ignore Potential Risks

SOURCE: thelobby-co.com During his recent State of the State address, Governor Jared Polis proudly declared that Colorado is once again leading the nation, this time in the realm of psychedelic drugs. Drawing parallels to Colorado's pioneering role in the legalization of marijuana, Polis celebrated the emerging psychedelic reform movement and its potential benefits. Polis highlighted Colorado's distinction as the first state to legalize recreational cannabis, a move that has been replicated by other states and countries seeking to emulate the state's perceived success. Now, because of voters, Colorado has become the first state to legalize the production, possession, and use of substances like psilocybin, ibogaine, mescaline, and DMT, through a voter-approved initiative in 202...

EDITORIAL: Yes to tax cuts, no to pipe dreams

By The Gazette Editorial Board | SOURCE: The Gazette Even for a State of the State address, Gov. Jared Polis did plenty of bragging. In his sixth such speech Thursday, he touted his administration’s strides on preschool and public ed; health care; climate change; the crime fight; affordable housing, even the introduction of gray wolves. It was as if he were seeking to burnish his credentials for a run for higher office — if that wasn’t apparent from his repeated references to President John F. Kennedy. Let’s hope the higher office he lands doesn’t turn out to be secretary of transportation — should the White House go to someone else. Sinking untold billions of dollars into passenger rail service — an idea that leaves him aglow — would do as little to get most of the nation from Po...
