Report: Taxpayers are funding services for illegals; Congress, including Republicans, approved it

By Bethany Blankley | The Center Square Taxpayers are not only funding the border crisis, but they are also paying for numerous free services illegal foreign nationals receive, according to a new report published by the House Judiciary Committee and its Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement.  The committee blames the Biden administration in its new report, "Chauffeur at the Border, Concierge in the Interior: How the Biden Administration Rewards Illegal Aliens on the Taxpayers' Dime" for costs to U.S. taxpayers.   It also notes that Congress, including Republicans, voted to fund the programs it identified as wasting taxpayer money and facilitating the border crisis when Congress passed an omnibus appropriations bill in M...

Poll: Majority of Hispanics favor deporting ‘all’ illegals

By Jason Hopkins  | The Daily Signal An outright majority of Hispanic Americans are in favor of a mass deportation plan for illegal immigrants, a new survey found. Fifty-three percent of Hispanic adults approve of “a new national program to deport all undocumented immigrants currently living in the U.S. illegally,” according to a CBS/YouGov poll conducted from June 5-7. Only 47% of Hispanic respondents said they opposed such a measure, which is outside the poll’s margin of error. The political and demographic breakdown of the survey further indicated widespread support for the hypothetical mass deportation plan. In total, 62% of respondents favored deporting “all” illegal immigrants from the U.S., including a majority of men, women, independents, conservatives, moderates, ...

Colorado Dems applaud Biden’s latest immigration order, while Republicans call it ‘madness’

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics Colorado Democrats on Tuesday applauded President Joe Biden's executive order to shield from deportation hundreds of thousands of individuals who are living in the country illegally and are married to American citizens.   Some Republicans, meanwhile, denounced the move as "madness."   The new policy would provide a path to citizenship to some 500,000 people, as well as the ability to legally work in the country. The Biden administration characterized the latest move — one of the most sweeping actions in several years — as aiming to help some immigrant families to stay together. Semi driver arrested in fatal Highway 285 crash had been removed from U.S. multiple times, ICE says

By Kelly Reinke, Angela Case | Denver Gazette (via 9News) The semi-truck driver who was arrested after a fatal crash on Highway 285 last week was in the United States without proper documentation and had previously been removed from the country multiple times, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Colorado State Patrol said Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza, 47, was arrested on vehicular homicide and vehicular assault charges after the crash Tuesday afternoon on Highway 285 near Conifer. CSP said Cruz-Mendoza's semi went off the edge of the road, rolled onto its side and dumped its load of pipe and angle iron on top of five other vehicles. The driver of one of those vehicles, 64-year-old Scott Miller of Bailey, died on the scene. Another driver suffered serious injuries. ...

Biden to take sweeping election-year action shielding estimated 550,000 from deportation

By MYAH WARD | Politico President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced a major new policy initiative shielding tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants residing in the United States from deportation, in what amounts to one of the most sweeping immigration measures of his tenure in office. Under the initiative, the Department of Homeland Security will take action to effectively grant federal protections to some undocumented spouses and children of U.S. citizens. The new program, known as “parole in place,” will affect an estimated 500,000 spouses of U.S. citizens and 50,000 children under the age of 21, administration officials said. It’s the same immigration policy that has been used for qualifying military families since 2007. The timing of the proposal is nearly as notable as the ...

Thanks to illegals, enrollment slump for Denver schools comes to an end

By Tom Gantert | The Center Square Denver Public Schools saw a boost in enrollment for the first time since the pandemic thanks to a surge of migrant students, according to a report the school board received this week. From 2014 to 2019, the school district’s enrollment had grown from 88,886 to 92,211. But the enrollment dropped three years in a row post-pandemic, dropping to 87,802 in 2022. In 2023, it grew to 88,258 with an additional 3,926 migrant students joining the district. By comparison, the district had 1,020 migrant students in 2021-22 and 1,543 migrant students in 2022-23. The district stated it was starting to see more migrant students leave the district after the city of Denver stated it would no longer provide long-term shelter for arriving migrants. ...

Utah Gov. Cox criticizes Denver mayor for busing migrants to Salt Lake City

By Derek Draplin | The Center Square Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is facing criticism from neighboring Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, who said Colorado’s capital city has been sending migrants to his state “without proper notification or approval.” “This is completely unacceptable and follows on the failed catch-and-release policy of the Biden administration,” Cox, a Republican, said in a tweet on Friday morning. “Every state has received illegal immigrants and Utah’s resources are completely depleted.” Cox was referencing reporting by KUTV that said Denver has paid to bus approximately 2,000 migrants to Salt Lake City. Hankinson: Why Biden’s executive order won’t solve the illegal immigration crisis

By Simon Hankinson | The Daily Signal President Joe Biden announced his highly anticipated executive order to supposedly secure the border on Tuesday. With it, the president attempted to do the impossible: avoid impeding the mass illegal migration for which his policies are directly responsible while convincing Americans he is “doing something”—at last—to secure the border. This “unserious” proclamation-plus-rule combo platter (a Presidential Proclamation on Securing the Border and the Joint DHS-DOJ Interim Final Rule to Restrict Asylum During High Encounters at the Southern Border) will do the first but not the second. It’s hard to imagine there is an American out there who can be persuaded that Biden has gotten religion on enforcing U.S. immigration law,...

Colorado Republicans call Biden’s asylum order ‘too little, too late,’ Dems say it’s ‘people over politics’

By By Nicole C. Brambila | Colorado Springs Gazette President Joe Biden’s sweeping executive action Tuesday to ban asylum seekers when illegal border crossings reach a certain threshold expectedly divided Colorado leaders along partisan lines, with Republicans calling the action “too little, too late” and Democrats describing the move as putting “people over politics.” Meanwhile, in Denver, a spokesperson for the city’s human services agency, which is in charge of the response to the crisis, said officials will closely monitor any impacts the executive order might have. “In the meantime, we will stay focused on what we are able to control, including our recent pivot away from emergency operations to a more sustainable programmatic approach,” Jon Ewing, a Denver Human Services spok...

Applegate: Possible solutions for El Paso County’s immigration problem

By Cory Applegate | Guest Columnist El Paso County recently saw two busloads of immigrants here illegally come down from Denver. Since Denver's sanctuary city policies create their own fiscal burden, they now claim they cannot afford to keep taking care of lawbreakers they attracted in the first place. The hospitals in the Denver area gave away $136 million in care last year, which will never be paid back by those with no income or insurance. While Denver's hospitals teeter on the edge of bankruptcy, President Joe Biden refuses to shut down the border. With more than 8,000 illegal crossings per day, none of which are going through a proper port of entry, El Paso County needs to prepare themselves for the inevitable. A distant problem at the southern border is now becoming a present p...
