Lawsuit alleges Estes Valley fire district violated open-meetings law

By BizWest The Estes Valley Voice, described as a “journalist-founded, locally owned digital newsroom”, has sued the Estes Valley Fire Protection District board of directors in Larimer District Court, alleging that it violated Colorado’s Open Records Act and open-meetings law by hiring Paul Capo as fire chief in a closed session on Oct. 9. According to the Estes Valley Voice, board members discussed Capo’s selection privately during an executive session, only later ratifying the decision in a public meeting without further public discussion. In a response to a Colorado Open Records Act request,  EVFPD board chair Ryan Bross told Patty Brown, the Voice’s editor and publisher, that “meeting protocol was determined by District legal counsel.” READ THE FULL...

Elk stomping in Estes: Wildlife officials call for human caution after three incidents at gateway to RMNP

By Michael Booth | The Colorado Sun An elk stomped a human and caused injuries early Friday for the third time in two weeks in Estes Park, prompting warnings of unprecedented elk behavior during calving season at the Rocky Mountain National Park gateway.  In the latest incident, an adult woman was walking a dog using a leash, near South St. Vrain and Stanley avenues, when an elk 20 yards away was startled. The woman tried to run behind a tree, but was knocked down by the elk and stomped and kicked repeatedly. Now downtown is deep into the crucial year of a project that will create a one-way loop around town and out toward the park. A new plan for the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park: Sell it to the State of Colorado

By Jason Blevins | The Colorado Sun The deal to sell the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park to an Arizona nonprofit has faded, so the state of Colorado is stepping in with a plan to buy the hotel.  The Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority, which helps nonprofit educational and arts groups fund capital projects, plans to take over ownership of the historic Stanley Hotel.  The authority will take the role as owner after the plan to sell the hotel to Arizona’s Community Finance Corp. fell through.
