Rep. Lynch: ‘I’m sorry and embarassed’

By Marianne Goodland | COLORADO POLITICS "I'm sorry." Rep. Mike Lynch of Wellington, the former minority leader of the state House, did not offer an apology to his colleagues or his constituents when he announced on Jan. 23 he would step down as minority leader. He had faced pressure from some Republicans to resign his post following his DUI arrest in 2022. But, on Thursday, Lynch unequivocally made an apology. "I'm sorry and embarrassed" to the core, Lynch told Colorado Politics. "As a body we fight to have a good impression and I'm very sorry I put a stain on that." Define the term carpetbagger: Rep. Mike Lynch Challenges Lauren Boebert on ‘Seat Shopping’

By The Lobby Rep. Mike Lynch's direct questioning of Rep. Lauren Boebert during a recent Republican primary debate continues to draw national attention and spark discussions about Boebert's ‘seat shopping’ controversy. Lynch's no-nonsense approach has garnered support from voters, who see it as a testament to his straight talk nature. On the crowded debate stage in Fort Lupton, Lynch posed a pointed question to Boebert, asking her to define the term "carpetbagger." The audience reacted with gasps and murmurs, highlighting the significance of the question in the race for Colorado's 4th Congressional District seat. Rep. Mike Lynch didn't sugarcoat the question to Rep. Lauren Boebert, “Could you give the definition of ‘carpetbagger?'" Boebert claimed that leaving her old di...

While Boebert’s fundraising has slowed, she still holds big cash lead in new district

By Sandra Fish | The Colorado Sun Lauren Boebert started the year with a large campaign cash advantage over her Republican primary opponents in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, even as the congresswoman’s fundraising slowed in the last three months of 2023, according to federal campaign finance reports filed Wednesday. Some of Boebert’s opponents in the 4th District, which includes the Eastern Plains and sweeps into Loveland and Douglas County, received financial help from big-name GOP donors, while others injected money into their own campaigns.  The reports, covering federal campaign fundraising and spending from Oct. 1 through the end of the year, are the first filed since U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, a Windsor Republican who represents the 4th District, announced in November...

Colorado Forward Party is state’s newest minor political party

By Thelma Grimes [email protected] The Secretary of State announced Tuesday that the Colorado Forward Party has attained enough registered voters to be recognized as a minor political party in the state. In a statement announcing the designation, the Forward Party said the “vital milestone” caps a year-long effort by a team of volunteers. Fewer Republicans that Gays, According to Colorado House Democrat

By the Lobby Recent claims by outspoken queer Colorado legislator Rep. Leslie Herod that, “there are more young people today who identify as LBGTQ than they do Republican,” have raised more than just a few eyebrows. Herod’s use of squish facts have been called into question in the past, especially during debate of the poorly conceived police accountability bill. The passage of SB20-217 resulted in a spike in crime, drug use and physical assault. But Rep. Herod’s recent unfounded claim that there are more LGBTQ+ young people than Republicans is far more than just rhetoric it reflects a narrow perspective rather than an accurate representation of the state's demographics. Trump survives Illinois Board of Elections vote determining his 2024 ballot status

By Jack Birle, Washington Examiner The Illinois Board of Elections unanimously decided to allow former President Donald Trump to remain on the ballot in the state, arguing it did not have the authority to determine his eligibility under the Constitution. The petitioners had argued Trump was ineligible to run for president, alleging he committed an insurrection with the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021, in violation of section three of the 14th Amendment. The board, made up of four Democrats and four Republicans, voted 8-0 to heed the recommendation of its general counsel and leave eligibility questions up to the courts. "I think that we do not have jurisdiction to wade into the constitutional issue to decide the question of whether the candidate engaged in ins...

Survey: Colorado voters agree state is too expensive, disagree on election integrity

By Thelma Grimes [email protected] While Democratic and Republican voters may be split on who they want to lead the country and whether they trust the integrity of national elections, a recent survey shows Colorado residents agree that the cost of living in the state is too high. One of the top takeaways from the annual Colorado Political Climate Survey conducted by the American Politics Research Lab at CU Boulder and the polling company YouGov is that 80% of survey participants said they are either “concerned” or “very concerned” about the rising cost of living. According to a Forbes Advisor analysis, Colorado’s affordability continues to trend high. Ranked 11th in the nation, Colorado’s total cost of living for residents is estimated at around $45,931. The analy...

Investor Griffin gave $5 million to pro-Haley group in January -source

By Svea Herbst-Bayliss and Alexandra Ulmer (Reuters) - Hedge fund billionaire Kenneth Griffin gave $5 million to an outside group supporting Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley this month, a person familiar with the donation said on Tuesday. The support from Griffin, a Republican mega donor, may help Haley assuage concerns of running out of money after she lost the first two Republican nominating contests to runaway frontrunner Donald Trump and faces a steep path to clinching the party's presidential nomination ahead of the November election. However, it remains unclear when in January Griffin made the donations, a potentially important fact given Haley lost the Iowa and New Hampshire contests, on Jan. 15 and Jan. 23, respectively. Caraveo challenger Gabe Evans announces $170K haul for 4th quarter in Colorado’s 8th CD

By Ernest Luning | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Colorado state Rep. Gabe Evans, one of four Republicans hoping to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo in the battleground 8th Congressional District, raised more than $170,000 in the last three months of 2023, his campaign said Monday. The Fort Lupton Republican's campaign plans to report starting the year with just over $186,000 in the bank. His campaign said Evans, who entered the primary in September, tallied contributions from nearly 2,000 unique donors last year, for an average donation of just under $95. Caraveo, a Thornton pediatrician and former state lawmaker, is seeking a second term representing the state's newest congressional seat, which covers parts of Adams, Weld and Larimer counties north of the Denver metro ar...

Elisabeth Epps’ primary challenger outraises incumbent, secures endorsements from legislators

Meanwhile, Rep. Tim Hernandez trails his chief primary opponent, Cecelia Espenoza, in fundraising By Marianne Goodland | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Rep. Elisabeth Epp's primary challenger has outraised the incumbent House legislator, securing key endorsements from colleagues and maximum contributions from several current Democratic legislators. Sean Camacho raked in the top dollars, pulling over $58,000 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2023, the most recent campaign finance reporting period showed.  His campaign chest counted contributions from fellow Democratic lawmakers, and, more notably, from leadership funds, which are set up to raise money to help Democrats keep their legislative seats and try and win others. All told, 17 current state lawmakers — including 11 of E...
