This change has been in the works for the last couple of years. Today, a carton of a dozen eggs in Colorado costs around $4. Three years ago, the national average was $1.79. The first part of the law already went into effect in 2023. That portion of the law required hens to be given more usable space in order for their eggs to be sold in the state. The portion of the law going into effect in 2025 requires hens to be in a cage-free housing system. By Amy Furr | Breitbart Americans may find it hard to get eggs this holiday season because of bird flu outbreaks and the economy. There has been a shortage of eggs in some stores across the nation, CBS News reported on Friday, noting the businesses in states that require eggs from cage-free hens have been affected by Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). “More than 40% of the nation’s roughly 300 million egg-laying hens are raised in cage-free facilities, but roughly 60% of ‘bird flu’ cases recently detected involved cage-free farms,” the report continued.
