Local ranchers get wolf training from Delta County Livestock Association

By Lindy Browning | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice There have been no reported wolf depredation of cattle or sheep in Delta County, so far, but Robbie LeValley, on behalf of the Delta Livestock Association, gave a Feb. 13 presentation to more than 130 ranchers in Hotchkiss, Colo., emphasizing how critical precise record keeping will be — should and must likely when the quiet ranching community is impacted by wolf depredation. Hotchkiss is a small town with a population of 929 people, all of whom are impacted by the local ranching economy. Hotchkiss is located in the North Fork of the Gunnison River, between Paonia and Delta, in Delta County. “We are not here to argue about the wolves, they’re here. Delta County schools grapple with state-mandated gender policies in community opposed to it

By Jen Schumann | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice In January 2025, House Bill 24-1039 will take affect across Colorado, requiring public schools to honor students' chosen names and pronouns. Schools are engaged in discussions as they form policies that adhere to the law. The community outcry in Delta County, a rural community in Western Colorado, reflects the challenges many school districts face. MESA COUNTY When opioids first appeared as fentanyl on the Western Slope in 2017-18, each pill cost $18. Now, because of increases in the supply, they are $2 a pill.  "Fentanyl is a 45-minute high, and we see people taking up to 40 pills a day. It makes zombies out of people in our community,” Rowell said. In Mesa County, according to Rowell, law enforcement and first responders have had to administer Narcan - a medication that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose - 114 times in the last year. “That’s one person every t...

Candidates rally support at Delta County’s ‘Food and Freedom Forum’

By Jen Schumann | Contributor, Rocky Mountain Voice Conservative candidates and their supporters came together recently at the Delta County 'Food and Freedom Forum,’ hosted by Dave and Sue Whittlesey at High Wire Ranch.  Cedaredge resident Mark Hillen shared why the upcoming election is important and his reason for attending: “2024 is a pivotal year for our nation. We’re standing at a crossroads — one path leads us toward socialism, and the other offers a chance to preserve our republic."  Colorado State Representative Matt Soper agreed. "We’re becoming increasingly similar to California in terms of tax policy, but the passage of House Bill 24B-1001 was a significant victory for conservatives," he said. "The property tax cuts passed in the special session are tangible — real cu...
