‘Top shelf’ lawmaker Rep. Dan Woog finds inspiration at capitol from his collegiate hockey past

By Jen Schumann | Contributing Writer, Rocky Mountain Voice Dan Woog doesn’t hesitate when asked which hit was harder — one on the ice as a hockey player or one in politics as an elected official. “Hockey taught me resilience,” said Woog, a former collegiate athlete from Minnesota and the newly-elected House District 19 state representative. “As an athlete, you never quit. You practice, work hard and learn to work with people you might not always agree with.” These lessons prepared him for the highs and lows of his political journey, including his 2022 re-election loss. Hockey, Woog explained, also instilled a drive to persevere through setbacks: “I just believe in the will,” he said. “If we have the will and never give up, great things can happen.”  That drive brought ...

Recount settles Republican wins in Colorado House Districts 16 and 19

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The Democratic Party's grip on the Colorado House has been loosened a bit following Republican victories in a pair of races which were so tight as to trigger mandatory recounts. Both Rebecca Keltie, in House District 16, and Dan Woog, in House District 19, won majorities following recounts performed in three counties and reported by the Colorado secretary of state's office. "A mandatory recount was required for the general election races for House Districts 16 and 19 due to the narrow vote margin between the top vote-getter and second-highest vote-getter," the secretary of state's advisory read. The trigger for a mandatory recount is a margin between the top two candidates of 0.5%. Republicans will hold 22 seats in the 75th General Asse...

Recount ordered in House District 19; Results of HD16 and HD19 recounts due Dec. 6

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The second of two recounts which will decide whether Republicans have erased the Democratic supermajority in the Colorado House has been ordered by Secretary of State Jena Griswold's office. Following the order of a recount Monday in House District 16, Griswold, as expected, ordered the recount in House District 19 later this week. After the tabulation of 56,729 votes in the Boulder and Weld County state House District 19 race, Republican Dan Woog was 109 votes ahead of Democrat Jillaire McMillan, by a margin of 20 one-hundredths of 1 percent of the vote, or 0.2%. State law requires a recount of an election with a margin of victory between the two leading candidates of less than half of 1 percent, or a 0.5% margin. "The counties within thi...

Republican strategist to grassroots: ‘Help cure ballots’ in tight HD 16, 19 races

Republicans Rebecca Keltie, Dan Woog can eliminate Democrats' Colorado House supermajority with wins By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice If Republicans are able to hang on to razor-thin leads in two Colorado House races, it would prevent veto-proof Democrat supermajorities in both state legislative chambers. As of late Tuesday, Republican Rebecca Keltie led Democrat Steph Vigil by 21 votes in House District 16, while Republican Dan Woog led Democrat Jillaire McMillan by 207 votes in House District 19. "These two races are still too close to call and will come down to the wire," said Tyler Sandberg, chief campaign strategist for Colorado House Republicans. Democrat Jillaire McMillan will face Republican Dan Woog in HD19 general election

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics A vacancy committee has selected Jillaire McMillan as the new Democratic candidate for the House District 19 election after the incumbent candidate, Rep. Jennifer Parenti, announced she was dropping out of the race last month.  McMillan, a small business owner, will face former state Rep. Dan Woog in the November election. “I’m a first-time candidate who’s been considering public office for a long time," said McMillan. "While I believe my combination of public service, community relationships, and nonpartisan advocacy have uniquely prepared me to be the candidate and legislator HD19 needs, I don’t think anything can really prepare you for the experience of being a candidate. This condensed process packed so much work and emotion into a shor...
