By Catie Cheshire | Westword Though most people have seen “speed monitored by aircraft” signs dotting highways across Colorado, few know that the Colorado State Patrol actually issues hundreds of tickets each year based on aircraft speed monitoring. The Colorado State Patrol Aircraft Unit uses four state-owned aircraft to monitor speeds from above, then works with officers on the ground to dole out tickets based on measurements from the sky. Any Colorado government agency can call upon the CSP aircraft at any time for “transportation for state business and traffic enforcement operations,” according to the CSP website. By Olivia Prentzel | The Colorado Sun Authorities believe a 32-year-old Thornton man saw a Colorado State Patrol trooper parked along a median as a “target of opportunity” before he slowed down and fired multiple rounds from a semi-automatic pistol at the trooper through his window, striking the trooper in his arm. Dashcam footage released Monday showed the rear passenger window of a trooper’s truck shatter as Victor Anthony De Santiago fired shots at Cpl. CSP to release body camera video of deadly shooting involving trooper

By Jim Hooley | Fox 31 News The Colorado State Patrol will release body camera footage on Monday of a deadly shootout between a trooper and a gunman. The shooting happened on the afternoon of Sept. 7 along U.S. Highway 36 near Federal Boulevard in Adams County. On Monday CSP will share the body camera and narrate the timeline of events that took place. CSP said Cpl. Tye Simcox was parked on the side of the road in his patrol pickup truck doing paperwork. That’s when the suspect drove past Simcox, heading eastbound in a black pickup, and opened fire from a semi-automatic handheld gun, CSP Chief Col. In Southwest Colorado, State Patrol reports 21% decrease in crashes while DUI arrests are up 18%

Overall crashes in Troop 5A’s jurisdiction are down 21% compared to last year, while proactive DUI arrests are up 18%, according to CSP Capt. Angela DeGuelle. DeGuelle said the Cortez team in Troop 5A, which is made up of troopers in Cortez, Durango and Pagosa, are leading in DUI arrests, proactive contacts and overall enforcement actions. By Miles Blumhardt | The Coloradoan A man has been found dead in a vehicle submerged in Horsetooth Reservoir, according to Colorado State Patrol. The crash was reported at 9 a.m. Friday as a single vehicle partially submerged in the reservoir near Larimer County Road 48C and Larimer County Road North 23 (Centennial Road), on the northeast corner of the reservoir west of Fort Collins, the state patrol told the Coloradoan on Monday. Poudre Fire Authority, Larimer County Natural Resources Department rangers and the Larimer County Dive Team searched the vehicle, which state patrol described as a Nissan SUV.
