Denver to close four shelters for illegal immigrants, starting with Aurora

By By Bennito L. Kelty | Westword The migrant crisis in Denver is Mayor Mike Johnston's biggest challenge so far in 2024. Since December 2022, more than 39,000 migrants, mostly from Venezuela, have shown up in Denver. To the tune of $58 million — all funded by local taxes — the City of Denver has either put them in hotels converted to shelters or bused them to other locations. For Denver to keep housing, transporting and feeding migrants through 2024, Johnston had predicted the city would need $180 million. To slash $60 million off that figure, he announced today, February 28, that the city will close four of its ten migrant shelters during the next month, at a rate of one per week. The mayor clarified that "no one is being displaced from these shelters, no one's length-of...

What does ‘Do Better Denver’ say about all of us, and the media?

By Cory Gaines | Guest Columnist I was recently introduced to a Twitter account called “Do Better Denver,” after reading about it in a Westword article. If you are like me and don't live in Denver (or on Twitter), you may not be aware of who they are, but it's not hard to describe. It's a social media account that posts unflinching pictures of homeless people around Denver along with sharing some items that would fall more comfortably into the category of news, e.g. sharing the amount Denver has spent on public safety this year. I think that reasonable arguments could be made either way about the value of pictures of homeless people and encampments in bringing to light the issue and/or in trying to fix it. I will leave it to you to come to your own conclusions there. I'm not going...

Liberal media says Denver made a ‘grave misstep’ in cuts to pay for migrant costs

By Colorado Peak Politics The Denver Post’s editorial board has made it official among his voting base: Mayor Johnston made a grave misstep cutting services directly impacting families to pay for Biden’s open borders and resulting migrant costs. The bottom line is this: Denver is still out $28 million for sheltering, feeding, and shipping off tens of thousands of migrants to other cities paying for their bus and plane tickets. Instead of using the $262 million in the city’s emergency reserves or even the $34 million in contingency funds to cover those costs, Johnston opted to make Denver taxpayers feel the pain just to recoup a measly $5 million of the city’s $4 billion budget. From the Denver Post: Johnston announced cuts last week to some of Denver’s core s...

Study: $95K income is ‘lower middle class’ in Denver

BY Maddie Rhodes | KDVR-TV It takes a lot more money to be considered anything above the lower middle class in the Mile High City. In Denver, making $95,000 a year isn’t enough to break you out of the lower middle class, according to a new study – but it is close. GOBankingRates researched the 100 largest cities in the U.S. and found the median household incomes for those cities. The study then followed the Pew Research Center’s definition of middle-class income as “two-thirds to double” the median income of an area. READ THE FULL STORY AT KDVR-TV

Denver City Council fails to override mayor’s veto of bill preventing homeless sweeps in freezing weather

By Sydney Isenberg , Landon Haaf | Denver7 With a 7-6 vote, the Denver City Council on Monday failed to override Mayor Mike Johnston's veto of an ordinance that would have banned homeless encampment sweeps when temperatures dip below freezing. City Council Ordinance 23-1960, introduced in December, aimed to revise the municipal code to prevent multiple city agencies from removing homeless encampments when temperatures 32 degrees and colder are in the forecast. It passed by a 7-6 margin on Jan. 29.. Nine votes were needed to protect the bill from mayoral veto. The mayor and several citizen groups had voiced their opposition to the ordinance. Johnston officially vetoed the ordinance on Feb. 2. In a letter to the council announcing...

Denver cuts services in response to the migrant crisis that’s costing the city $180 million

By Jennifer Brown | Colorado Sun Denver will cut hours at recreation centers, end in-person vehicle registration renewals and eliminate spring flower beds to save $5 million this year, a response to the migrant crisis that is expected to cost the city $180 million.  Mayor Mike Johnston on Friday blasted Congress for failing this week to pass a $118.3 billion bill aimed at stopping the flow of illegal entry at the southern border and making it easier for migrants who enter legally to get work permits.  About 40,000 migrants, mostly from Venezuela, have arrived in Denver over the past year, and more than 3,500 are living in city-funded hotel rooms. Thousands took bus rides to other American cities after arriving in Denver, and an unknown number are trying to stay in the ci...
