Boebert, GOP primary opponents spar over immigration policy, electability in TV debate

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The Republicans running in the June primary in Colorado's 4th Congressional District threw more elbows than punches in a televised debate on Thursday night in Denver, with most of the jabs aimed at U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, though her rivals also took hits. During the fast-paced, hour-long debate, the six Republicans running for the seat left vacant by former U.S. Rep. Ken Buck traded blows over immigration policy, electability and each other's ability to bring legislation across the finish line. Sponsored by 9News and Colorado Politics, the debate aired live on the Denver TV station and streamed online, where it's archived for later viewing. The station's Kyle Clark and Marshall Zelinger moderated, with additional questions from Colorado Polit...

Adams and Arapahoe County Republicans will co-host a forum at Bennett Middle School, 455 8th St in Bennett, with the forum beginning at 3 p.m. and scheduled to last two hours. Rep. Boebert’s bill delisting gray wolf from endangered list advances out of U.S. House

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert has delivered on one of the first promises she made to her potential new U.S. House district. In various debates in the 4th District, Boebert has noted the depredation by the gray wolf in Colorado, and had pledged to pursue a bill in Congress which would remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list. There are an estimated 13,000 gray wolves in the United States and another 30,000 in Canada. She authored House Resolution 764, titled the "Trust the Science Act", to remove protections the gray wolf enjoys while depredating livestock and other animals in Colorado. The act passed the U.S. House by a 209-205 vote Tuesday, oddly earning Democrat Rep. Yadira Caraveo's support among the four Democrat votes received. T...

Topping the 4th District special election ballot will be an Approval Voting Party candidate. But why?

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice Candidates from the two major parties appearing at the bottom of the 4th Congressional District's special election ballot will have to hope voters read the whole ballot. The top place on the ballot is generally viewed by candidates to be best, but the major parties won't hold the spot. Secretary of State Jena Griswold's office explains a random lottery drawing was held Wednesday, April 24, to determine the order of candidates on the ballot, as required by state law for vacancy elections. Neither the Democratic nor Republican candidate was drawn for the top-line. Frank Atwood, the Approval Voting Party's candidate, will hold the top line. He last appeared on a ballot in 2022, vying for the U.S. Senate seat won by Democrat Michael Bennet. Atwoo...

Peter Yu a ‘solid conservative’ of ‘broad appeal’, he says in letter to 4th District supporters

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice If Peter Yu earns the Republican nomination for Congress in Colorado's 4th District, it may just be through his work ethic and accessibility with voters. He didn't draw support from delegates in the special election and did not attend the Republican Party's assembly, but he has attended almost every Lincoln Dinner in the 22 counties of the district. Those are echo chambers, he has said, and Yu has preferred to take his largely self-funded campaign to the streets of the district ranging about one-third of the state's land area. "I have personally knocked on over 12,000 doors already this year," Yu said in a letter to supporters this week, announcing he would appear on the ballot. "I have enjoyed standing with many of you for 30 minutes or ...

Democrat Trisha Calvarese can remain on 4th District special election ballot, judge rules

By Sandra Fish | The Colorado Sun Democrat Trisha Calvarese will remain on the June 25 special election ballot in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, a Denver judge ruled Wednesday in throwing out a lawsuit seeking to dislodge her.  Calvarese “has presented a good faith effort to comply with applicable regulations and has not acted to mislead the electorate,” Denver District Court Judge David Goldberg wrote. The ruling came after a one-hour court hearing Tuesday in a lawsuit trying to keep Calvarese off the ballot based on the allegation that she hadn’t been registered as a Democratic voter in Colorado for long enough to qualify as her party’s nominee for the contest.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE COLORADO SUN

Caldara: Ex-Rep. Ken Buck leaves constituents without a voice in D.C., at worst possible time

By Jon Caldara | Complete Colorado (You can listen to this column, read by the author, here.) The speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has called for a vote on funding for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. He has done so at sizable professional risk. His isolationist Republicans might remove him from his leadership position for it. By the time you read this column, you’ll likely know how those votes went. As I write this, I have no idea. But I do know there’s one vote that could be wildly important, if only there were a representative to cast it. With Ken Buck’s resignation well before his term ends, he has left the voters of Colorado’s 4th Congressional District without a voice in government, and at a remarkably critical time. Not only is the ...

Flora gathers support of Phelen, Trujillo as they exit 4th District primary race

'I’m running FOR this office, not running FROM an office', Flora says By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice As they hit the exit in the 4th District U.S. House Republican Party primary race, two candidates this week threw their support to Deborah Flora. Chris Phelen on Friday and Floyd Trujillo on Saturday announced they had suspended their campaigns and asked supporters to support Flora in joint press releases. Phelen, the former chief of staff for retiring Rep. Doug Lamborn, who ran on a platform to end diviseness and dysfunction in Washington, cited Flora as the candidate who can now lead that effort. “I ran for Congress to help restore function and to fight for the rights of the people above the interests of the swamp,” he said. “Deborah Flora shares this passion to...

‘We must win the special election,’ Lopez tells Kit Carson Republicans, while supporting primary slate

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice BURLINGTON -- Greg Lopez is embracing the role some have called a placeholder. "You have some great Republican candidates looking to be your Congressman," Lopez told Kit Carson Republicans gathered here Friday. "This special election is just about who will finish [ex-Rep.] Ken Buck's term." Lopez is hoping to be selected to do just that in Colorado's 4th District. He must first defeat Democrat Trisha Calvarese and Libertarian Hannah Goodman. In Colorado's most red-leaning district, it does not figure to be a tall order for a Republican to be awarded the seat, even if just for six months. "Apparently, my [Democratic] opponent is facing a challenge they don't qualify," Lopez said. "Now, this challenge is coming from their own party." ...

Democrats Trisha Calvarese, John Padora land spots on 4th CD primary ballot at party assembly

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Democratic delegates sent Trisha Calvarese and John Padora to Colorado's 4th Congressional District primary ballot Thursday night at an online assembly. They join Ike McCorkle, a Marine veteran and two-time previous nominee for the seat, who qualified for the primary earlier this week by petition. Covering Douglas County, parts of Larimer and Weld counties and the Eastern Plains, the 4th CD was formerly represented by Ken Buck, a five-term Republican who resigned from Congress last month. It's Colorado's most solidly Republican congressional district. The June 25 primary election will appear on the same ballot as a special election to fill the six months remaining in Buck's term.
