Bird flu case with “flu-like symptoms” reported in Colorado, 1 person hospitalized

By Alexander Tin | CBS Colorado The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed a third U.S. bird flu hospitalization, Wyoming's health department said Friday after a woman was admitted to a healthcare facility in neighboring Colorado.  The patient was experiencing "flu-like symptoms" and had "health conditions that can make people more vulnerable to illness," Wyoming's health department said. She was likely exposed to the H5N1 virus through direct contact to an infected poultry flock at her home. Brambila | Denver Gazette State health workers distributed antiviral medication earlier this week to more than 150 workers who were potentially exposed to poultry infected with avian flu at a commercial egg facility in Weld County. Last week, state officials tested more than 50 symptomatic workers, Annemarie Harper, a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment spokesperson, said in an email to The Denver Gazette. Colorado State Veterinarian Dr. Maggie Baldwin said the state’s dairies and poultry facilities have cooperated with her office diligently to reduce the spread of HPAI. By John Ingold | The Colorado Sun Colorado health officials on Wednesday announced that a dairy worker in northeastern Colorado contracted bird flu after having close contact with sick cattle. The worker, an adult man, had a mild eye infection. He has since recovered. The human case is the first to be identified in Colorado related to the ongoing outbreak of avian influenza among dairy cattle. The outbreak among Colorado’s dairy herds is now the worst in the nation, with 27 cases having been identified in dairy herds, all in northeastern Colorado. Nationwide, four dairy workers have now tested positive for bird flu after working closely with infected cattle. Colorado now has the worst outbreak of bird flu among dairy cattle in the country

By John Ingold | The Colorado Sun Colorado’s outbreak of bird flu among dairy cattle is now the worst in the country, with more cases in the past month than any other state, according to the latest state and federal data. As of Monday evening, Colorado had identified 26 herds with cases of avian influenza. Of those, 22 were identified within the past month and the herds are still in quarantine. Four other cases were identified earlier and quarantines have since been lifted. All affected herds are in the northeastern part of the state. Study: Pasteurization cures milk from bird flu, but steer away from ‘raw milk’

By The Fence Post (via Hagstrom Report) Officials from several government agencies said today that tests for the presence of remnants of high path avian influenza (HPAI) in milk and dairy products show that pasteurization inactivates the virus, making the dairy products safe, but testing continues. The officials said that preliminary results from 297 total retail dairy samples of fluid milk, cottage cheese and sour cream have shown those products to be safe. Infant formula is also being tested, a Food and Drug administration official said. Dairy herd in Northeast Colorado tests positive for Bird Flu, USDA lab reports

By Logan Smith | CBS Colorado Colorado is now one of nine states in which dairy cattle have tested positive for avian influenza.  A U.S. Department of Agriculture laboratory confirmed Thursday the detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 from dairy cows in a northeastern Colorado herd. It is the first detection of the disease in Colorado.  The Colorado State Veterinarian's office was notified Monday about a herd demonstrating clinical symptoms of HPAI in cattle, a Colorado Department of Agriculture press release stated.
