By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado The hole in the Colorado state budget is getting bigger. The latest figures show a shortfall of about $1.2 billion, and the state's chief economist says the reserve -- or rainy-day fund -- will run out of money by 2029 if nothing changes. "The message is we are on an unsustainable path with our budget if we don't change our spending habits," said State Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer, who is one of six lawmakers on the Joint Budget Committee. The Republican says lawmakers have simply overspent, pointing out the state has added more than 7,000 full time employees and 17 new state offices in the last six years alone. Property squatters would face stiff $1,000-a-day fines in HB 1104, slated to be heard Feb. 4

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice The Colorado solution to a national problem of squatters occupying a property without consent or ownership and with few remedies to remove them will be considered Tuesday during the House Judiciary Committee. House Bill 25-1104, by Rep. Rebecca Keltie, is slated to be heard at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, in HCR 0107. It will mark the first hearing of a bill written and sponsored by the freshman Republican representing District 16 in El Paso County. "A person who occupies a premises without the consent of the landowner commits the new crime of squatting," the bill reads, with a first offense resulting in an unclassified misdemeanor and a $2,000 fine per offense. Barbara Kirkmeyer told attendees here Saturday evening at the Weld County Republican Party’s Lincoln Dinner. In a presentation she termed a Republican “State of the State” address, she detailed the inability to even play defense on bad bills, and asked Republicans to help in future legislative sessions by electing more conservatives. “We are in the minority, and it sucks,” Kirkmeyer said. “We have 12 Republicans in the Senate and 19 Republicans in the House.
