As AI technology vaults forward, groups press for national regulation

By Thelma Grimes | Colorado Politics As artificial intelligence is sprinting forward, many argue that the public policy to regulate the technology is falling behind. And with the federal government playing catch-up, states are taking small steps to fill that vacuum, but several sectors, including attorneys general, argue that state-level efforts offer an inadequate, patchwork of rules when what's really needed, they argue, is a uniform standard on the national and international stage. Others cautioned against rushing to regulate without careful analysis of a proposed policy's ramifications for businesses, consumers and companies' freedom to innovate.    READ THE FULL STORY AT COLORADO POLITICS

Business leaders plead for changes in state’s new AI law, including definitions and appeals

By Ed Sealover | The Sum & Substance Developers and deployers of artificial intelligence systems are begging a legislative task force to amend definitions and an “untenable” appeals process in Colorado’s AI law — and getting pushback from some groups who feel the law doesn’t regulate enough. The push-and-pull has played out for two months before the Artificial Intelligence Task Force, a 26-person group of elected officials and citizens put together by Gov. Jared Polis after he signed “with reservations” the most comprehensive AI regulatory law in America. With the regulations not going into place until February 2026, the task force is hearing from myriad groups affected by them and is required to submit a report to the Joint Technology Committee by February 20...

The future is here: AI-powered cameras dispatched firefighters to wildfire

By Spencer Wilson | CBS Colorado After a wildfire broke out at an unattended campsite just east of a popular Breckenridge neighborhood, local firefighters are praising a new tool for their quick reaction to get the flames put out before they became too much to handle.  Aside from growing in a place where wildfire mitigation had taken place only a year and a half ago, the Wellington wildfire was spotted by a Pano AI camera, financially supported by Xcel Energy. The camera sits on a cell tower with a 360-degree view and submits an alert to emergency crews if it notices smoke. While that has resulted in a few false alarms in Summit County, this was the first instance where a wildfire was caught early, and kept to only one-eighth of an acre, firefighters said, thanks to...

AI-guided robot used to sort recylables in Colorado Springs

By Kasia Kerridge | CBS 11-Colorado Springs A local recycling facility is the first in southern Colorado to use a robot to help sort materials. 11 News visited Republic Services, near I-25 and Garden of the Gods, to see the AMP Cortex in action. Republic Services says the AI-guided recycling robotic system helps sort food and beverage containers from El Paso, Pueblo, Chaffee and Elbert counties. “It uses a vision system and it recognizes materials that [are] coming up through the stream, and it will decide what to pick,” said maintenance safety tech at Republic Services Thomas Brackett. “It has a vacuum tube, and what it will do is it registers, it will go down and pick it and then it will shoot it down into the shoot that it needs, so it uses air.” READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS 1...
