State’s airports receive nearly $20 million in state and local grants, with more to come

By Alexander Edwards | The Denver Gazette The Colorado Department of Transportation approved $13.8 million in funding for a statewide aviation grant program. In total, airports in Colorado will receive just over $18 million in grants when state and local money is fully allocated. In the metro Denver area, Centennial, Colorado Air and Space Port, Erie, Denver International Airport and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport will receive just over $2.8 million in grant awards in 2025. Statewide, the biggest award from CDOT is going to the Walden-Jackson County Airport for runway reconstruction. United’s filing with Denver could signal possible HQ move out of Chicago

By Ben Bradley | Fox 21 News United Airlines has sent another signal about a potential move of its corporate headquarters from Chicago to Denver.  In a new filing with the City of Denver, United said it may eventually build more than 1 million square feet of office space to accommodate more than 6,000 employees on land it purchased in 2023 near the Denver airport. United employs nearly 5,000 corporate employees in Chicago.  The first priority for development of the Denver land is for a new flight simulator training center.  The airline says future growth and pilot training will create demand for 60 additional flight simulator bays than United currently operates closer to the downtown Denver. By Breeanna Jent  | The Gazette The number of people traveling from Colorado Springs Airport reached sky-high levels in 2024 — the most in 25 years and eclipsing 2023 figures by 5%. "It's no secret that the airport had a strong year last year, and we continue to exceed our enplanement numbers," Greg Phillips said in a news release this week, the city's aviation director who on Thursday announced his impending retirement on Feb. 7. By Ashley Eberhardt | Fox 21 News An initial report from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) states that a Piper single-engine airplane that landed in a field near Monument on Jan. 6 experienced engine trouble. The Piper PA-12 landed in a field near Highway 105 between Monument and Palmer Lake around 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 6. According to FAA records, the plane took off from Kelly Air Park in Elbert, Colorado, about 25 miles northeast of Monument. In four days, wintry weather has canceled 250 flights, delayed 2,820 more at DIA

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice A four-day snow event in Denver and areas east of the Continental Divide has done more than dump some badly-needed moisture on half the state. It has greatly affected air travel. As of Tuesday mid-morning, there have been 2,820 flights delayed and 250 flights canceled since the beginning of the snow event on Saturday, according to Flight Aware. There has been some amount of snow accumulation each day. The heaviest cancelation day was Sunday, with 106; the heaviest day for delays was Saturday, with 1,119. Flight Aware breaks delays and cancelations related to an airport into outbound (departure) and inbound (arrival). Just before 10 a.m. Wednesday, South Metro posted on X that crews were called to the Meridian Golf Course in Englewood on reports of an aircraft that had crashed and landed upside down. According to South Metro, the aircraft was a Cessna 172 with two people on board. Both victims were able to walk away, one with minor injuries and another with no injuries.
