FBI investigates second Trump assassination attempt

By Miranda Nazzaro and Julia Manchester | The Hill Former President Trump was the target of another apparent assassination attempt while golfing in Florida on Sunday, marking the second attempt on his life in less than three months.   The incident adds to a series of unprecedented events from this election cycle and comes just nine weeks after the former president was shot in the ear during the prior assassination attempt.  That shooting took place at a rally in July in Pennsylvania and sparked a flurry of questions about the Secret Service’s preparation and how political rhetoric might have played a role in the violence.   READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

Boeing machinists go on strike

By Taylor Giorno | The Hill Boeing factory workers went on strike early Friday morning after overwhelmingly rejecting a new union contract with the company. Around 33,000 machinists went on strike shortly after midnight on the West Coast after the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union announced 94.6 percent of workers had voted to reject the proposal and 96 percent approved the stoppage. The work stoppage puts financial strain on the storied airplane maker, which has been struggling to repair its reputation after the door plug of a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew out during an Alaska Airlines flight in January, prompting regulatory action and congressional scrutiny. The Harris honeymoon is over: new poll delivers warning signals to the Vice President

By Drake Hunter | The Hill A string of recent polls is delivering warning signs for Vice President Harris ahead of Tuesday evening’s critical presidential debate.  A New York Times/Siena College poll released Sunday showed former President Trump holding a 1-point lead nationally, suggesting the Harris honeymoon as the Democratic nominee could be coming to a close. It showed tight races in the seven battleground states, signaling the race for the White House could go in either direction. It also showed that while 90 percent of voters said they knew everything they need to know about Trump, a smaller 71 percent said they know everything they need to know about Harris. Trump pleads not guilty to superseding indictment as Jan. 6 case back in DC court

By The Hill Former President Trump’s federal Jan. 6 case is back in a D.C. courtroom on Thursday. Trump is not there in person, but attorneys and prosecutors on special counsel Jack Smith’s team are arguing before U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to determine how the case should proceed now that the Supreme Court ruled Trump has broad immunity from criminal prosecution. That high court decision in July sent Trump’s criminal prosecution back to the lower court to apply the standard. In Chutkan’s case, she she sparked a flurry of activity in August when she announced she would hold a conference to chart the course of the case. Congress faces urgent deadline to prevent government shutdown, stopgap needed to keep operations running

By Brie Stimson  | The Hill Congress is staring down a deadline this month to prevent a government shutdown, as members on both sides of the aisle have made clear a stopgap of some kind will be needed to keep the lights on. Lawmakers have until Sept. 30 to pass legislation to prevent a funding lapse. And while November’s elections could make the chances of a shutdown less likely, leaders have their work cut out for them amid deep divides on spending.  READ THE FULL STORY AT THE HILL

RFK Jr.’s possible alliance with Trump threatens to muddy election

By Hanna Trudo and Julia Mueller | The Hill The growing possibility that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. could drop out and endorse former President Trump is injecting further chaos into an already unpredictable moment in the election. Kennedy’s allies emphasize that nothing is final yet, and members of his team are in disagreement over how to move forward. But the two campaigns have been negotiating this week, The Hill has learned, with one scenario having Kennedy drop out as early as Friday and back the former president. READ MORE ON THE HILL

Sen. John Hickenlooper, who once said he wasn’t fit for the job, wants one more term in U.S. Senate

By Tara Suter | The Hill Colorado Sen. John Hickenlooper (D) said Wednesday that he will run for reelection just once. “I’m only gonna do two terms,” Hickenlooper told Punchbowl News’ Andrew Desiderio. “I’ve said it first here, two-term limit, oath of conscience.” Hickenlooper, the state’s former governor, gained a seat in the upper chamber by way of winning a key race against former Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) in 2020. “There should be more people that are involved in local, municipal politics and governing and state politics and governing, who [get] into the Senate so that they bring those experiences with ‘em,” said Hickenlooper, who has also served as mayor of Denver. Turley: A Harris-Walz administration would be a nightmare for free speech

By Jonathan Turley | Commentary, The Hill The selection of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) as the running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris has led to intense debates over crime policy, war claims, gender identity policies and other issues. Some attacks have, in my view, been inaccurate or overwrought. However, the greatest danger from this ticket is neither speculative nor sensational. A Harris-Walz administration would be a nightmare for free speech. For over three years, the Biden-Harris administration has sustained an unrelenting attack on the freedom of speech, from supporting a massive censorship system (described by a federal court as an “Orwellian Ministry of Truth“) to funding blacklisting operations targeting groups and individuals...
