Colorado lawmakers grill officials over wolf release communication failures

Ranchers' trust destroyed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife's wolf release By Marianne Goodland  | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Lawmakers grilled officials from the Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, who found themselves on the hot seat on Wednesday at the state Capitol, where policymakers described communication failures and problems tied to the release of wolves in Grand and Summit counties last month. The lawmakers said the state mishandled communications over the release and added that destroyed trust with ranchers and landowners. They added those ranchers and landers are now saying they will no longer work with the agency on conservation issues. Dan Gibbs, chief of the Department of Natural Resources, apologized for the communication failures. ...

Governor Polis Boasts About Leading the Nation in Psychedelics, Continuing to Ignore Potential Risks

SOURCE: thelobby-co.com During his recent State of the State address, Governor Jared Polis proudly declared that Colorado is once again leading the nation, this time in the realm of psychedelic drugs. Drawing parallels to Colorado's pioneering role in the legalization of marijuana, Polis celebrated the emerging psychedelic reform movement and its potential benefits. Polis highlighted Colorado's distinction as the first state to legalize recreational cannabis, a move that has been replicated by other states and countries seeking to emulate the state's perceived success. Now, because of voters, Colorado has become the first state to legalize the production, possession, and use of substances like psilocybin, ibogaine, mescaline, and DMT, through a voter-approved initiative in 202...

COLUMN: Meet Colorado’s new Republican establishment | Jimmy Sengenberger

By Jimmy Sengenberger | SOURCE: Gazette Move over, old guard Republican Establishment. There’s a new Establishment sheriff in town. This week, Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williams used the party’s official email account to declare his bid for the 5th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn. He embedded his campaign press release while pledging to remain chairman — raising eyebrows given the chair’s job is to elect Republican candidates, including ensuring fairness in the primaries. Let’s be clear: Irrespective of party, clinging to leadership while using your position as a political booster seat is as ethical as selling ice to an Eskimo. Williams refuses the same courtesy to other congressional candidates, punting the decision to the party’s executive...

EDITORIAL: Yes to tax cuts, no to pipe dreams

By The Gazette Editorial Board | SOURCE: The Gazette Even for a State of the State address, Gov. Jared Polis did plenty of bragging. In his sixth such speech Thursday, he touted his administration’s strides on preschool and public ed; health care; climate change; the crime fight; affordable housing, even the introduction of gray wolves. It was as if he were seeking to burnish his credentials for a run for higher office — if that wasn’t apparent from his repeated references to President John F. Kennedy. Let’s hope the higher office he lands doesn’t turn out to be secretary of transportation — should the White House go to someone else. Sinking untold billions of dollars into passenger rail service — an idea that leaves him aglow — would do as little to get most of the nation from Po...

Polis looks more to the past than the future during his 2024 State of the State Address

SOURCE: thelobby-co.com Governor Jared Polis delivered his State of the State address to the Colorado Legislature, but critics argue that his speech was long on big deals and short on details. As a governor deep into his second term, the annual address is typically a mix of celebrating accomplishments and outlining future plans. However, Governor Polis seemed more focused on highlighting past victories than providing a clear roadmap for the future. Strange for a governor whose liberal party, though divided by vitriol and infighting, controls both chambers and all branches of government. Governor Polis shares his superficial vision for solving Colorado’s housing shortage. He omits the many bills being introduced that included government mandates. Polis calls housing a civil ...

How Colo Dems are subverting democracy with vacancy panels to bypass voters

SOURCE: Colorado Peak Politics Socialist activist turned politician Tim Hernandez is not wasting any time raking in the cash to lock down a new career handed to him by a select group of Democrat Party activists know as a vacancy committee. Hernandez was appointed to the 4th district state House seat with 39 supporters on the committee after Serena Gonzales-Gutierrez resigned in the middle of her term. It’s a procedure Democrats have seemingly adopted to lock out voters from the initial election. Then the party props up their tool as an incumbent seeking reelection, which provides mega leverage by the time these appointees eventually face the electorate a year or so down the road. Hernandez kicked off his new position just months ago by celebrating the Hamas attack on Israel the...

Republicans lament Gov. Jared Polis’ ‘blatant disregard for rural Colorado,’ while Democrats cheer focus on housing affordability

By Marianne Goodland | SOURCE: Colorado Politics Lawmakers and other politicos who watched Thursday's State of the State address from Gov. Jared Polis mostly reacted along party lines to his policy prescriptions on housing, transportation, public safety, education and taxation.  But not always. Democrats, for example, lauded some of his strategies on housing — but not so much the governor's support for tax cuts. Republicans, meanwhile, liked what they heard on cutting taxes but were not thrilled with his other ideas.    Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, a former state senator who attended the speech, his first since winning election last spring, he said he is "really excited about his focus on affordable housing statewide."  READ THE FULL ARTICLE ON COLORADOPOLITICS...

Democrat Adam Frisch tops $2.9 million for quarter in race for Lauren Boebert’s Colorado House seat

By Ernest Luning | SOURCE: Colorado Politics Democratic congressional candidate Adam Frisch raised more than $2.9 million in the fourth quarter for his bid to represent the Colorado seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, his campaign announced Thursday. The former Aspen City Council member was seeking a rematch against Boebert until she switched just before the end of the year to run in a less competitive district. He plans to report starting the 2024 election year with more than $5 million on hand. The Democrat's campaign said Frisch received an average donation of just over $27 from more than 106,400 individuals in the three-month period ending on Dec. 31. Danaher: Colorado high court snubs due process with Trump decision

By Charlie Danaher | SOURCE: Complete Colorado Page Two In ruling that Trump should be removed from the primary ballot, the Colorado Supreme Court furthers and promotes the legal madness, while pretending to defend Democracy. In the opinion, the majority states, “We are also cognizant that we travel in uncharted territory…” One might ask if, upon finding themselves in “uncharted territory,” they just happened to pause and reflect on over a thousand years of western jurisprudence, and at least ponder the idea of presumed innocence until proven guilty?  Apparently not. It’s important to note that this is the same court who, in 2016, could not even find it in themselves to bother taking up the Masterpiece Cakeshop case. That case went to the U.S Supreme Court, which slapped...

State Board of Ed member Stephen Varela, a former Democrat, joins GOP primary in Colorado’s 3rd CD

By Ernest Luning | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Colorado State Board of Education member Stephen Varela on Thursday announced that he's entering the Republican primary for the congressional seat represented by U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who switched late last year to run in another district. An Army combat veteran and former Democrat from Pueblo, Varela said he believes voters in the 3rd Congressional District are "ready for fundamental change." “I believe we are on the verge of a conservative renaissance in America,” he said in a statement. “So many Americans look at the woke indoctrination in our schools, unimaginable debt and deficits, Biden’s overseas failures, and the complete chaos at our Southern border, and they’ve given up hope. But these failures put the spotlight on the con...
