Navy outfits aircraft carrier with first drone operations center

By Caitlyn Burchett | Stars & Stripes The Navy recently outfitted an aircraft carrier with the first drone operations center, furthering the service’s high-tech pursuit into remotely piloted aircraft. The MQ-25 Stingray warfare center was installed aboard the USS George H.W. Bush, which is based at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., according to an Aug. 15 announcement from Naval Air Systems Command. The MQ-25 Stingray, built by Boeing, is a tanker drone designed to refuel manned fighter jets in midair. Early next year, the Bush will put the warfare center to the test, leading the first at-sea trial of the center’s networks. The crew won’t operate a Stingray but will instead use the software to communicate with a simulated aircraft in a lab in Patuxent River, Md. READ MORE ON STAR...

Korean War Army Col. Ralph Puckett, 97, recipient of Medal of Honor, lies in honor at Capitol ceremony

By STEPHEN GROVES | Stars & Stripes Congress gave one of its highest final tributes on Monday — a lying in honor ceremony at the Capitol — to Ralph Puckett Jr., who led an outnumbered company in battle during the Korean War and was the last surviving veteran of that war to receive the Medal of Honor. Puckett, who retired as an Army colonel, died earlier this month at the age of 97 at his home in Columbus, Ga. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2021, the nation’s highest military honor, seven decades after his actions during the war. The lying in honor ceremony at the Capitol is reserved for the nation’s most distinguished private citizens. Only seven others have received the honor, and the latest, in 2022, was Hershel W. “Woody” Williams, who was the last surviving Medal of...

Biden says he never meant to keep classified documents; Hur stands by report on President’s memory

By ZEKE MILLER, COLLEEN LONG AND FARNOUSH AMIRI | Stars & Stripes Over five hours of interviews, President Joe Biden repeatedly told a special counsel that he never meant to retain classified information after he left the vice presidency, but he was at times fuzzy about dates and said he was unfamiliar with the paper trail for some of the sensitive documents he handled. A transcript of the Biden interviews was made public Tuesday, just as the special counsel, Robert Hur, went before the House Judiciary Committee to face questions about his investigation of the Democratic president. Hur, in his report, concluded that Biden should not face criminal charges over his mishandling of documents but also impugned the president’s age and competence. The special counsel stood by his assess...
