Large Cherry Creek West development moves ahead as neighborhood groups ask for more clarity

By Mark Sameulson | Out There Colorado The Denver Planning Board on Wednesday approved a rezoning of the west end of Cherry Creek Shopping Center for a huge redevelopment that could bring seven office and apartment buildings — some to 13 stories high —  on a site where the old Bed Bath & Beyond store now overlooks University Boulevard. With the board’s unanimous vote on Wednesday, the Cherry Creek West project moves to the City Council for review and approval, despite worries from neighborhood groups that the planned development might grow larger still as its buildings come out of the ground over the next decade. Representing a consortium of neighborhood groups, Lou Raders of the Cherry Creek Steering Committee appealed to city planners to better define the size of t...

What’s to blame for killing 1,000s of fish at Denver-area lake? There may be multiple factors at play

By Spencer McKee | Out There Colorado Fish are getting killed en masse at the popular Denver-area Sloan's Lake, leaving locals scratching their heads with regard to why the die-off is taking place. Several different organizations have chimed in to provide some insight, and it looks like multiple factors are at play with Sloan's Lake Park Foundation reporting that around 2,000 fish are estimated to have died at the location over the past week. Denver Gazette's Anya Moore reports that it's a combination of multiple factors, according to the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment – blue-green algae, heat, and environment processes. That said, one major underlying issue might be behind a lot of the problems. READ THE FULL STORY AT OUT THERE COLORADO

Gone viral: In unique Colorado moment, mountain goats dance on vehicle roof

By Piper Russell | Out There Colorado In a viral video posted to Instagram by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), two mountain goats climb onto a Subaru and start to jump around, showing off a concern that few American drivers outside of Colorado might have to deal with. According to the post, mountain goats' hooves help them to climb up cliffs, steep slopes, and even cars. Their hooves have a hard outer rim and a soft rubbery bottom that acts like a suction cup. Eagle County traffic stop results in recovery of guns, 23 pounds of cocaine

By Spencer McKee | Out There Colorado A traffic stop for a routine violation led to a "substantial" seizure of more than $300,000 worth of cocaine in Colorado's high country on July 17. According to the Eagle County Sheriff's Office, the related traffic stop took place at about 8:00 p.m. last Wednesday on I-70 near Gypsum, which is a town located between Eagle and Glenwood Springs. Once the vehicle was pulled over on the side of the road, the driver, a 24-year-old from Chicago, was contacted by a uniformed deputy. At that point, the deputy noticed several indicators that were believed to have pointed to further criminal activity. Law enforcement deployed a K-9 unit, which delivered a positive alert. A search of the vehicle then ensued. READ THE FULL STORY AT OUT THERE COLORADO

As wolves have ravaged livestock, ‘Born To Be Wild’ plates devoted to them has raised over $300,000

By Piper Russell | Out There Colorado In just six months, Colorado's new 'Born To Be Wild' license plates have raised $312,800 to help protect livestock and wolves. According to a press release from the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project, the revenue from the license plates goes directly to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to exclusively fund non-lethal tools and strategies to reduce conflict between wolves and livestock. The non-lethal conflict mitigation tools and techniques include the use of fladry fences, repellent lights, non-lethal munitions, and other visual and auditory deterrents that keep wolves away from livestock. Funding from the license plates also goes to range riders to monitor livestock and deter wolf-livestock conflicts and for trained livestock guardian dog...

Prairie Ridge Natural Area in Northern Colorado to grow by 140 acres for $1.1M

By Seth Boster | Out There Colorado An area for conservation and recreation is growing in northern Colorado, helping to realize a long-term goal of local land managers. The 140-acre addition to Prairie Ridge Natural Area "represents the final piece in a 25-year effort creating a 3,500-acre separator between Loveland and Fort Collins," read a recent announcement from Great Outdoors Colorado. That was in announcing a $1.1 million grant toward a multi-agency acquisition totaling about $6.7 million. A majority of the funding is from the city of Loveland, which manages Prairie Ridge Natural Area and has led the arrangement with the city of Fort Collins and Larimer County. Colorado reported to have highest share of ‘remote workers’ in US

By Spencer McKee | Out There Colorado It's no secret that 'remote work' has been taking off in popularity since the start of the pandemic, and more people are taking advantage of this lifestyle in Colorado than in any other state around the country. According to a recent report from the US Career Institute, a whopping 37.34 percent of Coloradans work remotely at least one day a week – the highest percentage on a state-by-state basis nationwide. This compares to 11.93 percent of residents who work remote at least one day a week in Mississippi – the state with the fewest share of remote workers. Work-from-home is said to save the average American 55 minutes of commuting time each day, with hybrid workers saving up to $6,000 per year on purchases like gas, food, and office clothes an...

‘Center of the gold universe’, this one spot is oft ignored by tourists in Idaho Springs

By Seth Boster | Out There Colorado A stone monument stands near a junction of highways that was once known as a junction of creeks. It stands inconspicuous, just a rock atop a block. It’s been even easier to miss lately, surrounded by orange construction wrap, lost in the hubbub. “It’s an important spot of Colorado history that nobody knows about,” Robert Bowland says. The local historian knows it as the spot where the Colorado gold rush began. READ THE FULL STORY AT OUT THERE COLORADO
