Bill to create fiscal committee to rein in $34 trillion national debt advances in House

By Zachary Halaschak, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE The House Budget Committee voted Thursday to advance landmark legislation that would create a fiscal committee to limit the growth of the national debt. The committee advanced the bipartisan legislation in a 22-12 vote. The Fiscal Commission Act of 2023 would form a panel consisting of both Republican and Democratic lawmakers from both chambers of Congress, in addition to outside experts. Specifically, the commission would be composed of 16 members — the speaker of the House, House minority leader, Senate majority leader, and Senate minority leader would each appoint four members. Three of the four members must be lawmakers, and one must be an outside expert. The country is staring down some $34...

Democrat Congressman Challenges Republicans to Remove Statue of Liberty in Immigration Debate

SOURCE: THELOBBY-CO.COM In a stunning display of misplaced rhetoric, Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.) has taken aim at his Republican colleagues, challenging them to introduce a bill that would remove the Statue of Liberty. Frost's provocative statement came during a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing, where he criticized Republicans, particularly Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), for their immigration stances and their support of the H.R. 2 bill. Frost, a first-term legislator, read a portion of the poem "The New Colossus," which is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. The poem, intended as a message to immigrants arriving at Ellis Island in the 1800s, has long symbolized America's welcoming embrace of those seeking a better life. However, Frost's cynical use of ...

House conservatives press Mike Johnson to attach border security to Senate funding bill

By Cami Mondeaux and Reese Gorman, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE House conservatives are urging Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to make last-minute changes to a stopgap funding measure, seeking to attach Republicans' border security bill to the final text. Members of the House Freedom Caucus met with Johnson on Thursday, just hours before the lower chamber is set to vote on a continuing resolution that would avoid a partial government shutdown over the weekend. Conservatives pressed Johnson to amend the resolution text to include House Republicans' signature border bill, H.R. 2, in the final version of the funding extension — a request they said the speaker is "considering." “[Rep. Andy] Harris and I just went and spoke with the speaker about ...

WEF releases report on financing sustainable agriculture

Hagstrom Report  | SOURCE: THE FENCE POST The World Economic Forum, which is meeting in Davos, Switzerland, this week, has released a report proposing a model for achieving sustainable agriculture worldwide. The report says, “To support the adoption of practices and sustain their implementation, a key source of financing should come from the monetization of the full value of all ecosystem services delivered by regenerative practices, including improved resilience and environmental outcomes like healthier soils, carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions avoidance, reduced freshwater use and pollution, and enhanced biodiversity.” “In exchange for ecosystem services, all the actors that benefit from regenerative agriculture, including value chain participants (across crop rot...

Democratic Denver mayor to lead coalition of mayors asking for federal help for immigrants

By Brady Knox, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is heading to Washington, D.C., as the head of a coalition of mayors asking for help with the migrant crisis. Johnston, a Democrat, will use the United States Mayors Conference to advocate federal assistance in dealing with the migrant crisis. Denver is one of several Democratic-controlled cities that have been the target of Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R-TX) migrant busing campaign, which has seen Texas ship thousands of immigrants to the sanctuary cities. “In D.C. this week for the @usmayors conference to work with fellow mayors, our federal delegation and the White House to advocate for federal action on the migrant crisis,” Johnston said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. Johnston has previously...

US court will reconsider forcing Texas to remove Rio Grande migrant barrier

By Daniel Wiessner | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE (Reuters) - A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday said it would reconsider a recent decision requiring Texas to remove a 1,000-foot-long (305-meter) floating barrier it had placed in the Rio Grande river to deter migrants from illegally crossing the border with Mexico. The decision by the full 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans sets aside a divided three-judge panel's December ruling, which had sided with the Biden administration and said that the state could not install the string of buoys without permission from the federal government. That ruling was a setback for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, who has strongly criticized Democratic President Joe Biden's handling of record numbers of migrants crossing the border ille...

Blackburn questions Veterans Affairs over illegal immigrant use of agency resources

By Julia Johnson, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE EXCLUSIVE — Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) sent a letter Wednesday to the Department of Veterans Affairs pressing the agency on its use of resources for the healthcare of illegal immigrants. Veterans Affairs has an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in which it processes medical claims on the agency's behalf, but the VA emphasizes it does not provide illegal immigrants healthcare. ICE covers the cost of those claims. The letter, addressed to Secretary Denis McDonough, expresses skepticism at that statement, asking if the agency checks citizenship status before approving veteran healthcare benefits and whether the Biden administration has given any directive on medical care for t...

New Hampshire voters grill GOP hopefuls on problem they want treated as ‘top’ priority

By Peyton Sorosinski, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE As GOP candidates shift their sights to New Hampshire, its residents are demanding more answers to the opioid crisis, which they say is plaguing the prominent swing state. Many New Hampshire voters, such as recovered addict Kristina Amyot, say they are frustrated with how Republican candidates have prioritized border security and law enforcement over treatment and recovery efforts, the Associated Press reported.  “I feel like every four years it gets talked about, and then it gets lost. We don’t really do much with it, and that’s something that needs to change because this should be one of the top priorities,” Amyot told the outlet. “To think that these people don’t care about us is reall...

U.S. Supreme Court to hear challenge on homelessness ordinance ban

By Kenneth Schrupp, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE (The Center Square) – The U.S. Supreme Court announced it would hear a landmark challenge to an earlier ruling preventing enforcement of anti-camping ordinances — a challenge that was supported by a broad coalition of Republican and Democratic leaders, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom. “California has invested billions to address homelessness, but rulings from the bench have tied the hands of state and local governments to address this issue,” said Newsom in a statement. “The Supreme Court can now correct course and end the costly delays from lawsuits that have plagued our efforts to clear encampments and deliver services to those in need.” In 2023, Newsom filed an amicus brief supporting Supreme Court review of a...

COLUMN: Biden and Democrats endanger the Republic

BY MIKE ROSEN | SOURCE: THE GAZETTE In essence, Joe Biden kicked off his reelection campaign mumbling through a theatrically contrived speech in Valley Forge, Pa., arranged to coincide with the third anniversary of the January 6, 2021, debacle at the U.S. Capitol. Staging this at the site of George Washington’s Revolutionary War headquarters in front of a backdrop of American flags, Biden shamefully misappropriated the father of our country as an implicit endorser of his reelection. Biden’s handlers seem convinced Donald Trump will be his opponent. The oft-repeated slogan of his tirade loaded with exaggerations, paranoia and demagoguery was that Trump was “a threat to democracy,” echoing the drumbeat Democrats, progressives, and the liberal media have long pounded. Biden equated Trum...
