Pueblo County GOP ‘closing things down’ at its HQ after bullet hole discovered in window

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The Pueblo County Republican Party chair said Tuesday the party is temporarily uprooting from its downtown headquarters in the southern Colorado city after volunteers discovered a bullet hole in a plate glass window days before ballots were due in the state's primary election. "We're closing things down now until we know we have a safe space for volunteers," county GOP chair Michelle Gray told Colorado Politics. Gray said she had no evidence the bullet was intentionally fired at the political party's headquarters in the 600 block of North Main Street and declined to speculate as to motive. "It can’t be the first window on Main Street that’s been shot out," she said. READ THE FULL STORY AT COLORADO POLITICS

Washington County, where ballot count is low, but turnout dependably high

By BRIAN PORTER | Rocky Mountain Voice It is the home to every farmer's favorite diner, Mom's Kitchen, a county seat whose namesake is more synonymous with a major city in Ohio, and is Colorado's leader in wheat production at almost 5 million annual bushels. The rural landowners here count their land in sections, not acres, and many routinely grow crops the old school way, without irrigation pivots. The last Democratic President to win here was Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. Republicans have carried at least three-fourths of the Presidential vote here in each election since 2000 -- four of the last five by 80 percent or better. Situated west of Yuma County, known here as Cory Gardner Country, and south of Logan County, the "backwards L" shaped Washington County is reliable for ...

Boll: Local media demonizes engaged conservative community members

By Laureen Boll | Guest Columnist, Rocky Mountain Voice I’m quite close to recent events happening at the Douglas County School Board, given my role as a parent advocacy leader in Douglas County and being a parent of two children whose K-12 years were spent in Douglas County School District (DCSD). Much of my role as a parent advocate is monitoring laws and regulations against the rights of individuals upheld by the U.S. Constitution, and speaking up when it appears that the rights of parents and/or students are being violated by the government, in this case taxpayer-funded schools.  The Douglas County School District recently updated its Nondiscrimination/Equal Opportunity policy to incorporate a new state statute titled “Concerning Protections for Students Against Discrimin...

University of Colorado Board of Regents condemns protestors who targeted homes of two regents

By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado The University of Colorado's Board of Regents unanimously passed a resolution Thursday condemning a group that organized protests outside the homes of two regents in the Denver metro area. The group, Students for a Democratic Society, demonstrated outside the Superior home of Board Chair Callie Rennison on June 2 and then gathered outside the Arapahoe County home of Regent Ilana Spiegel, who is Jewish, on Sunday. SDS called for the university system to divest from companies with ties to Israel and called for violence against and the murder of Jewish people.  The resolution reads, in part, "The Board of Regents condemns Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) for its actions directed at Jewish people in the town of Superior and Arapahoe County, ...

Young teachers at Denver school say they were sexually abused by special needs students for months without help

By Jennifer Brown | The Colorado Sun Three young educators at a Denver school for kids with severe behavioral issues were routinely sexually assaulted by students and ignored by administrators when they sought help, according to a new lawsuit.  The three women, recent college graduates who were passionate about working with children with special needs, said that for months they endured being groped, grabbed and choked at The Laradon School, a nonprofit with about 70 students in north Denver.  Victoria Schmidt, a paraprofessional hired in 2021, was repeatedly assaulted by a 13-year-old boy in her classroom, including the day he grabbed her in a hallway, placed her in a chokehold so tight that she feared she would die, and stuck his hand “deep inside her pants and underwea...

RTD faces scrutiny from state regulators because of slow trains and “significant disruption”

By Ashley Portillo | CBS News Colorado Ten mph speed restrictions and longer travel times for RTD light rail users are causing significant frustrations for commuters traveling to and from the south Denver metro area. RTD says the slowdowns are due to "rail burns" and maintenance, along with other projects. Meanwhile, it has led to a push for more transparency from RTD on multiple fronts. Now, safety regulators with Colorado's Public Utilities Commission are intensifying their scrutiny of RTD, as is a local organization. PUC state regulators sent a letter to RTD last week, requesting information such as safety inspection results, schedules for completing inspections, and progress on repairs. This comes after the PUC claims RTD didn't notify the commission about issues and slowdo...

Following backlash, Douglas Co. school board delays discussion, action on trans student policy

By McKenna Harford | Douglas County News Following backlash from a group of parents, elected officials and others opposed to updating discrimination policies to include transgender students, the board for the Douglas County School District has indefinitely delayed a vote on the matter.  Proposed changes to the policies would have explicitly prohibited discrimination and harassment against transgender and nonbinary students, mirroring new language in the federal Title IX law as well as a 2023 Colorado law.  Board president Christy Williams said the board received over 100 emails about the proposed changes prior to a meeting on Tuesday night and that she wanted to delay action on the matter to give the board more time to get information about the impacts of ...
