Montrose County jail entering final phase of $8 million renovation

By Bella Demosthenous | KJCT-TV ABC 8 News Montrose County Jail is currently in the third and final phase of this seven-year, $8 million project. “We looked at the facility and determined that we needed a lot of extra room in holding. There were some deficiencies with the architecture originally, so what we did was expand that,” says Dean McNulty, Montrose County Jail commander. The jail nearly doubled in size, going from three holding cells to nine, bringing its total holding population from 15 up to 45. By Aiga Petelo | KJCT-TV ABC 8 News Grocery affordability has been a hot topic, especially since prices have been increasing across the U.S. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, eggs, beef, and milk prices have increased significantly since 2020. “Everybody that I’ve spoken to out the doors and you know working families are feeling the struggle that things are just feeling too expensive,” said Rep. Yara Zokaie of District 52. A bill introduced to Colorado lawmakers this week aims to ban price gouging in sales of necessities, which bill sponsor Rep. New state law mandates how you may legally store your personal firearm in a vehicle

It prohibits leaving a handgun in an unattended car unless the gun is also inside a locked container made of a hard material on all sides. Motorist tire chain laws expand in the western area of Colorado

From the Utah border, all the way up until you reach Morrison right outside of Denver, commercial truck drivers must carry chains in case of snow. “That law in the past, started at the mountain passes and this year we’ve expanded that to include further western areas on some highways to include I-70 to the Utah border right here behind me,” said Captain Matt Ozanic from the Colorado State Patrol. “The reason for these changes is quite simple. We want to make sure that our professional drivers have access to the resources they need. Before they get to those mountain. Report details D51’s poor financial standing, reasoning behind school closures

On Friday, the district released a report detailing their reasoning for Nisley, Scenic and Clifton Elementary schools facing potential closures. In the report, the district detailed its poor financial standing. The state provides each Colorado school district with per pupil funding, meaning that D51, which expects to see a decline in 400 to 500 students per year, isn’t receiving sufficient funds to keep all the schools open and staffed. Prop. 130 would provide $350 million for law enforcement in Colorado, if passed in November

Proposition 130 would require the state to provide $350 million to help local police departments recruit, train, and retain officers. The funding can be used to increase pay for officers, provide hiring and retention bonuses, and provide ongoing training. Additionally, the proposition would also require the state to provide a one-time $1 million death benefit to help families of police officers who are killed in the line of duty. The Colorado Fiscal Institute,who has come out against the measure, stated that the $350 million could be used to pay the salaries of more than 5,700 Colorado teachers or even double Colorado’s Affordable Housing Fund.
