Auto thefts down statewide, but still remain high, State Patrol says

By Rachel Saurer | Fox 31 News Colorado State Patrol shared an encouraging look at auto theft numbers statewide. The number of cars being stolen has dropped to the lowest it has been since 2020. “In 2023, we saw a 20-plus percent reduction over 2022. And this year in 2024, we are trending for further decreases from last year. An additional 20 percent or more depending on how this last month or so goes,” said Cale Gould, public outreach coordinator, Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority with CSP. Gould said there are many factors contributing to this decrease to include owners taking accountability for their vehicles and the state passing legislation to further criminalize motor vehicle theft and provide more funding. Lone Tree police investigating increase in crash-and-grab home burglaries

By Rachel Saurer | Fox 31 News Over the past several weeks, the Lone Tree Police Department has seen an increase in home burglaries. In each case, suspects have gained access to the houses by breaking large windows or sliding glass doors on the rear of the house before leaving with cash, high-dollar purses, jewelry and other items. The houses generally back up to commercial property, open space, or a golf course, and as of yet, no one has been home at the time, which police said is the one positive. “That’s the bigger fear of the whole thing right, if that ever happened you know what’s the outcome of that going to be?” Lone Tree Police Chief Kirk Wilson said. Property owners in Denver to pay fees for own sidewalks beginning Jan. 1

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News Denver will begin charging property owners in 2025 for sidewalks across the city, and most will be charged a flat fee of $150 each year — but there are exceptions. The sidewalk fees will be used to fund repair and construction programs in the city. The fee was initially approved by voters in 2022 and faced a few setbacks as the city ironed out how the fee would be implemented. Property owners subject to the fee will be charged the first half of the annual fee during the first six months of the year and then will face the second portion of the fee in the second half of the year. Law requiring all eggs sold in Colorado to be cage-free to go into effect as 2025 begins

By Samantha Jarpe | Fox 31 News All eggs sold in the state of Colorado will be cage-free starting Jan. 1, 2025. This is because of a law that was passed and signed into law in 2020. The first part of the law already went into effect in 2023. That portion of the law required hens to be given more usable space in order for their eggs to be sold in the state. The portion of the law going into effect in 2025 requires hens to be in a cage-free housing system. There are a few specific requirements farmers have to meet for this to be the case, including giving hens a certain amount of usable floor space. READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS

Denver City Council revisits ban on flavored tobacco products; last one vetoed by Hancock in 2021

By Heather Willard | Fox 31 News Denver City Council is once again eyeing a flavored nicotine ban, which supporters say would protect children in the metro area, according to council documents. In 2021, then-Denver Mayor Michael Hancock vetoed a measure passed by Denver City Council to ban flavored nicotine sales in the city. At the time, vape shop owners in Denver told FOX31 that the ban would impact over 90% of their inventory and likely put them out of business. However, proponents of the ban said it would have kept nicotine products out of the hands of underage users.' READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS
