By Samantha Jarpe | FOX 31 Denver The Denver Fire Department responded to a two-alarm fire that displaced a family Saturday afternoon. As of 2 p.m., the fire was completely out. The fire occurred in a northwest Denver neighborhood, near 39th Avenue and Clay Street. One firefighter was evaluated for smoke inhalation, but no civilians were injured. But, it had nothing to do with voting. “We are an organization of veterans and volunteers that provides honors for our departing veterans at Fort Logan National Cemetery,” said Maury Smith, All Veterans Honor Guard commander. On Tuesday, March 5, the guard was recognized and honored by the state of Colorado and state Rep. Anthony Hartsook of Colorado’s 44th District, which encompasses portions of Douglas County. In Weld County, emu named ‘Buddy’ on the loose identified as an ostrich by passerby

By Heather Willard | KDVR-TV Sometimes, law enforcement is asked to respond to some uncommon calls. On Tuesday, for example, Weld County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Officers responded to a report of an “ostrich in the roadway.” The “ostrich” turned out to be an emu who was out wandering in the area of Weld County Road 76 and County Road 33. County animal control officers were able to capture and contain the large, flightless bird, and safely hold the emu in a nearby fenced residential yard — with permission from the owner. A passerby was able to identify the emu’s owner as Andrew Leffler, who was notified and picked up his emu, who he said was named Buddy. READ THE FULL STORY AT KDVR-TV FOX 31

Hundreds of people who live near the airport are so fed up with noise from planes and other issues that they’re suing Jefferson County, which owns and operates the airport. The lawsuit represents more than 400 people who live in the Rock Creek neighborhood, which is in Superior and just northwest of the airport. In Denver, making $95,000 a year isn’t enough to break you out of the lower middle class, according to a new study – but it is close. GOBankingRates researched the 100 largest cities in the U.S. and found the median household incomes for those cities. Metro District board member recalled in special election amid complaints of ‘verbal abuse and physical intimidation’

By Heather Willard | KDVR-TV DENVER (KDVR) — According to the unofficial vote tally published by the Denver Office of the Clerk and Recorder, a reportedly contentious board member of the Ebert Metropolitan District Board of Directors has been recalled and replaced. Murray Hawthorne, treasurer and board member for the Ebert Metro District, was described in a recall petition as someone who “does not represent or respect Ebert residents.” The petition further claimed a pattern of verbal abuse and physical intimidation from Hawthorne to residents. Hawthorne protested the recall election on Nov. 29, 2023. Officers, staff walk out at prison in JeffCo in pursuit of higher wages

By Heather Willard | KDVR-TV DENVER (KDVR) — Around a dozen correctional officers at a federal prison in Colorado walked out Thursday over claims of low staffing and pay and held a picket to foster support. According to staff at the Federal Correctional Institution, Englewood, correctional officers say they are short-staffed and forced to work overtime hours. They also said non-officers will sometimes be put on duty as officers, which is dangerous for all involved. AFGE Local 709, which oversees the Council of Prison Locals #33, released 12 points to share the workers’ perspectives. The main sticking point is the prison is currently short nearly 50 positions, and over half of those open positions are for correctional officers, according to the union. The proposed legislation is moving forward almost a year after the death of K-9 Graffit of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. Graffit was killed chasing a man through a wooded area on Feb. 13, 2023. Police say he had a gun on the School of Mines campus in Golden before the chase. The bill would change the law on aggravated cruelty to animals to become a Class 4 felony.
