Gilpin County election watcher dismissed while observing signature verification

By Rachel Saurer | Fox 31 News The Gilpin County Clerk dismissed an election watcher on Tuesday who was watching the signature verification process after a disagreement on how close the watcher could be to the poll worker’s station. An election watcher is a fairly new addition to the ballot counting process, born from former President Donald Trump’s proven-to-be-false claims of election fraud in 2020. According to the Secretary of State’s office, an election watcher is “an eligible voter who has been appointed by an authorized appointing entity to witness and verify the conduct of an election.” Election watchers also must complete a 10-minute training course. They are essentially another layer of security and transparency in the ballot-counting process. READ THE FULL STORY AT F...

What Colorado would look like if it stayed on Daylight Saving Time

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News On the first Sunday of November, the clocks will shift back an hour for the five months of Daylight Saving Time — but this isn’t what lawmakers in Colorado approved. Two years ago, the state passed legislation to stay on daylight saving time permanently. However, Colorado never switched to permanent daylight saving time because federal law still doesn’t allow it. Because of the Uniform Time Act of 1966, federal law only allows states to opt out of the program and does not let them permanently opt in. This is why Colorado can’t opt in, but Arizona was able to opt out and make standard time permanent in the state. READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS

When casting your vote, are ballot ‘selfies’ illegal in Colorado? Should you do it?

By Safia Samee Ali | Fox 31 News, via NewsNation Some enthusiastic voters may have to resist the urge to post a photo of their marked ballot this election season, as many states ban sharing ballot selfies. Sharing selfies of completed ballots has become a way some voters show who they supported, but concerns over coercion and even bribery have led at least 14 states to make it illegal.  Voting in secret has long been a staple in American history, but the explosion of social media and ballot selfies has caused the secrecy issue to resurface, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.  READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS

TABOR refund amounts announced for 2025, based on income

By Heather Willard | FOX31 Just days after announcing there would be TABOR refunds for Colorado residents in 2025, the state has announced how much money each Coloradan household can expect to receive. TABOR, or the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights, is an amendment to the state constitution that limits how much revenue Colorado governments can retain and requires that Colorado residents vote to approve any tax increases. The overages are refunded to Colorado taxpayers. In an audit released on Oct. 14, the Colorado Office of the State Auditor said the state has $1.4 billion in excess revenue, which translates into TABOR refunds. This is a fair bit lower than what was collected during the 2023 tax year when the state reported it was returning some $3.28 billion to Colorado t...

A rare comet has been spotted in Colorado. Here’s how to see it before it is gone for 80,000 years.

By Maddie Rhodes | Fox 31 News On Sunday night, people across Colorado spotted a rare comet that only comes every 80,000 years. Luckily, there’s still time to see it. According to NASA, the comet was discovered in 2023 at China’s Tsuchinshan Observatory and on an ATLAS telescope in South Africa, eventually getting the name Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. While the comet was first documented last year, it is believed to be very old. NASA said it came from the Oort Cloud, which lies beyond Pluto. After the comet travels within 44 million miles of Earth, it won’t return for another 80,000 years — and that’s assuming it survives the trip. READ THE FULL STORY AT FOX 31 NEWS
