By MIKE SCHNEIDER | Fox 21 News, via the Associated Press The U.S. Census Bureau is changing how it counts immigrants in annual estimates by including more people who were admitted for humanitarian, and often temporary, reasons. The change is being made in an effort to better reflect population shifts this decade, officials said Monday. Population estimates, including immigration, are due to be released Thursday showing how the populations of the United States and the 50 states changed this year. However, the new approach to counting immigrants will only be reflected nationally. The percentage of U.S. residents who were foreign born rose to its highest level in more than a century in 2023. Ballot drop-off and polling locations in Colorado

By Sarah Ferguson | Fox 21 News Election Day 2024 is right around the corner and many voters have already filled out and mailed in or dropped off their ballots ahead of next Tuesday, Nov. 5. On Tuesday, all ballots must be received by the county clerk by 7 p.m. and there are several locations across Colorado where voters can either drop off their ballots or vote in person. On the Colorado Secretary of State’s website, people can search polling and drop box locations in their area by simply typing in their address. Once complete, voters are taken to a map of county locations where additional information is available including; days of the week and hours each location is open, suggested routes, along with details regarding registration, election rules, and ballot information. Huerfano County discovers ballot scanning error stemming from vendor

By Norishka Pachot | Fox 21 News The Huerfano County Government announced on Monday, Oct. 28 it discovered an error in some ballots that resulted in a scanning issue. Huerfano County said via Facebook the error came from the vendor, Fort Orange Press. They further explained some of the ballots received in the mail had damaged timing marks, causing a scanning issue. According to the County, the issue was detected recently and there is a process in place to ensure every ballot is scanned and every vote is counted, reiterating every ballot returned is being processed. On Tuesday, Oct. 22, Las Animas County issued a letter addressing the error and what citizens who were affected should do. Some ballots sent to voters in Trinidad did not contain the city of Trinidad’s TABOR issue, also known as Ballot Measure 2A. The measure would fund improvements to parks, playgrounds, open spaces, and other spaces that need it. The proposed tax would be paid by hotel, motel, and Airbnb guests. Voters affected live in portions of Precinct Six on the western side of Trinidad. By Dara Korn | Fox 21 News The El Paso County Clerk and Recorder’s Office sent over 6,100 General Election ballots to voters under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), including military members, their dependents, and citizens living abroad. “We ensure every eligible voter is enfranchised, with special accommodations provided for our out-of-state military and citizens living out of the country,” said Clerk Steve Schleiker. “These voters receive ballots in advance of others and have an 8-day extension to return their ballot. The city will hold an informational meeting about the new community pool proposal on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 6 p.m. A year-round pool facility concept was developed for the original Icabone Pool site. In the meeting, three presentations were given touching on different abortion related topics. One of which is Amendment 79, a ballot measure that would create a right to abortion in Colorado and repeal the State Constitution’s ban on government funds for abortion. “I want to start by saying the only reason that we’re here having this hearing is because people’s feelings are hurt, that they can’t control women’s choices and bodies,” said City Council woman Sarah Martinez, District 3. Inmate found unconscious in El Paso County jail cell has died, sheriff’s office says

By Brett Yager | Fox 21 News The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office (EPSO) said a man who was found unresponsive in his cell has passed away at the hospital. On Wednesday, Sept. 11 at around 8:15 p.m. during a routine welfare check at the El Paso County Jail, deputies found a man unresponsive in his cell. EPSO said evidence found suggested the man attempted to take his own life. Deputies and medical staff began lifesaving measures until first responders from American Medical Response and the Colorado Springs Fire Department arrived at around 8:32 p.m., and at 9:22 p.m. the man was taken to the hospital.
