By Alexander Kirk | Denver Gazette (via 9News) Yuma School District will be closed Tuesday after severe weather impacted the area Monday night, Denver Gazette media partner 9News reported on Tuesday. The northeast Colorado school district said all Yuma schools, as well as its district offices, would be closed Tuesday. "Due to the severe weather that came through town tonight, All Yuma Schools including the district offices will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Dairy herd in Northeast Colorado tests positive for Bird Flu, USDA lab reports

By Logan Smith | CBS Colorado Colorado is now one of nine states in which dairy cattle have tested positive for avian influenza.  A U.S. Department of Agriculture laboratory confirmed Thursday the detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 from dairy cows in a northeastern Colorado herd. It is the first detection of the disease in Colorado.  The Colorado State Veterinarian's office was notified Monday about a herd demonstrating clinical symptoms of HPAI in cattle, a Colorado Department of Agriculture press release stated. Sonnenberg wins 4th District straw poll in Holyoke, his second straw poll victory

By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice The candidate that emerges in Colorado’s 4th District to represent the eastern third of the state in Congress will have a tall order – to serve a predominately urban population along the Front Range and a mostly rural population along the furthest reaches of the Eastern Plains. Jerry Sonnenberg may have begun making the case he is one who can do it, winning his second straw poll in the district Sunday at a tri-county forum held in Holyoke. The combined Phillips, Sedgwick and Yuma County event drew a crowd of about 200-250 and Sonnenberg came away with 55 of the 184 votes cast to take 29.9% of the vote. By BRIAN PORTER | The Rocky Mountain Voice Lauren Boebert has more than twice the support of any other candidate in the 4th Congressional District race, according to sentiment polling recently conducted for The Rocky Mountain Voice. The study, by Media Intelligence Group, in early February found Boebert with 48.7% support, leading Trent Leisy with 17.2%, Richard Holtorf with 13.7% and Mike Lynch with 10%. The remaining 10.4% in the study was split by the remaining six candidates in the race at that time. The study analyzes social media posts to provide accurate public opinion on what is being discussed by voters, not what the media is reporting. Boebert's lead is 31.5% in the poll. By Yuma Pioneer Yuma District Hospital has been authorized by the board of directors to access up to $2 million of the district’s investments to help cover operations cost. The move came during the YDH Board’s regular monthly meeting on January 24. Interim CEO Ted Beckman made the request to board members Monica King, Mitch Korf, Delaina Klein and De Ann Rawson Sewell. Board member Robert Dorothy was absent. It had been addressed earlier in the meeting when an employee voiced her concerns about the hospital district operating at a $2.5 million loss. But it’s no longer a functioning motel in the traditional sense, so much as a pay-as-you-go refuge for locals who have nowhere else to call home. Marygrace Lankhorst and her husband, Lonnie Walker, are among the residents. By the time a major cold snap hit the region in mid-January, they’d been living at the motel for about two and a half months.
