Elisabeth Epps, Tim Hernández unseated as Democratic legislative primary results are a mixed bag for progressives

By Brian Eason, Sandra Fish and Jesse Paul | The Colorado Sun Moderate Democrats allied with Gov. Jared Polis won a number of Colorado state legislative primaries Tuesday night, the culmination of a hotly contested election season that pitted progressives against moderates as the future of state policy hung in the balance. In one of the most closely watched races, attorney Sean Camacho defeated incumbent state Rep. Elisabeth Epps, a progressive Democrat from Denver whose tumultuous term in office was frequently marked by public squabbles with her colleagues. The Associated Press called the race at 8:20 p.m., and Camacho led with 64% of the vote as of 10:23 p.m. Another Polis-backed candidate, state Rep. Lindsey Daugherty, a moderate Democrat from A...

Hot dog anyone? Denver vendors may be unlicensed and lacking sanitary standards

By Catie Cheshire | Westword When hordes of patrons file out of Denver sports arenas and music venues, they’ll inevitably encounter someone hawking hot dogs, ready to fill bellies directed by inebriated brains. Because who’s saying no to a bacon-wrapped glizzy at 2 a.m.? But city officials, pointing to a surge of unlicensed hot dog vendors in Denver, warn against partaking in street dogs. Without proper health inspections, they say, you could be signing up for more than just a hangover. “Unfortunately, with the dangerous lack of sanitary standards being practiced by some of the unlicensed hot dog carts, people may find themselves sick the next day and assume it is because of the alcohol they consumed the previous night — instead of the hot dog and bacon sitting u...

Officials concerned with public safety, human waste at Auraria protest camp

By Rogelio Mares | KDVR DENVER (KDVR) — Auraria Campus officials raised concerns Thursday about safety and sanitary conditions at the ongoing encampment protests there. There was no word Thursday on plans to clear the encampment, but options appear to be running thin. Campus officials say they are concerned about nonstudents and possible criminal activity, while students said they are not the ones causing the issues. Auraria Campus officials report hazards to public safety and cleanliness at the encampment, which has been a weeks-long protest against the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. “A lot of it has been our patrols and our folks who have been monitoring the quad,” said Devra Ashby, with Auraria Higher Education Center. Denver announces plan to invest over $500M to revitalize downtown

By Brooke Williams | KDVR DENVER (KDVR) — After teasing the announcement in an “ask me anything” session on Reddit, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said Thursday that the city plans to invest more than $500 million over the next decade to “restore downtown vibrancy and stimulate economic growth.” According to a release from the city, downtown Denver has been slower than other areas when it comes to recovering from the pandemic. The city said downtown has seen lower foot traffic, businesses closing and a lack of new housing development because hybrid and remote working options are becoming more popular. From March to May 2023, Denver’s downtown foot traffic was at an average of 56% of what it was in 2019, according to researchers at the University of Toronto School of Citie...

Denver City Council fails to override mayor’s veto of bill preventing homeless sweeps in freezing weather

By Sydney Isenberg , Landon Haaf | Denver7 With a 7-6 vote, the Denver City Council on Monday failed to override Mayor Mike Johnston's veto of an ordinance that would have banned homeless encampment sweeps when temperatures dip below freezing. City Council Ordinance 23-1960, introduced in December, aimed to revise the municipal code to prevent multiple city agencies from removing homeless encampments when temperatures 32 degrees and colder are in the forecast. It passed by a 7-6 margin on Jan. 29.. Nine votes were needed to protect the bill from mayoral veto. The mayor and several citizen groups had voiced their opposition to the ordinance. Johnston officially vetoed the ordinance on Feb. 2. In a letter to the council announcing...

Vehicle window-washing by unskilled migrants in Denver raises safety concerns

By The Lobby The influx of Venezuelan migrants in Denver, who have taken to washing windshields of stopped cars at busy intersections, is raising concerns about safety and the city's sanctuary policies. Tens of thousands of migrants in the city, facing ongoing delays in obtaining government work permits, have resorted to working in teams, cleaning vehicles waiting at intersections in exchange for cash. While some see this as reminiscent of their home countries, critics argue that it highlights the flaws in U.S. border policies and Denver's burdensome sanctuary city strategy. Yoli Casas, the executive director of the nonprofit migrant support group ViVe Wellness, compares the sight of window washers to her origins in Venezuela. She says that in South America, such as Venezuela, Col...

Ordinance banning homeless encampment sweeps during frigid weather vetoed by Denver Mayor Mike Johnston

By Noah Festenstein | The Gazette Denver Mayor Mike Johnston on Friday vetoed an ordinance approved by the City Council that would have banned homeless encampment sweeps during frigid temperatures, arguing it contravenes the city's camping ban.   Already, the councilmembers who sponsored the ordinance intend to bring it back before the council on Feb. 12, a move that signaled their attention to override the mayor's veto.  In Johnston's first veto since taking office in July, the mayor's office said the proposal "would make it more difficult for the city to help people experiencing homelessness get inside during cold, unsafe conditions." "Though well-intentioned, this legislation would restrict the city’s ability to do this life-saving work for approximately four ...
