Overbeck: Democrats in Colorado Legislature push bills endangering your children

By Joy Overbeck | Special to the Rocky Mountain Voice Most of us want to see the most vicious child predators and the monsters who use children for sex locked in the slammer for a good, long time. But, not the Democrats in the Colorado Legislature. They unanimously killed Rep. Brandi Bradley’s, R-Douglas County, House Bill 24-1092 that would increase sentences for criminals convicted of pimping a child for prostitution, keeping a place of child prostitution and similar crimes to sentences of at least four years in prison. The bill would also increase sentences for the worst predators using menacing or criminal intimidation – that is, violence or threats of violence – to induce a child to commit prostitution to at least eight years in jail. This seems reasonable. But, since the Bra...

Hillman: Colorado Democrats are no longer the party of free speech

By Mark Hillman | Capital Review Remember when Democrats fiercely defended freedom of speech and freedom of expression with few limitations? That was when Colorado Democrats still had to compete with Republicans for statewide elected offices and legislative majorities. Having grasped the political upper hand, Democrats are now sadly in thrall to Progressivism and its requisite censorship of dissenters. Instead of proclaiming, “I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it,” Democrats at our State Capitol now practice “free speech for me, but not for thee.” Consider the prevailing limitations on debate in the Colorado House of Representatives. Once called “The People’s House,” the chamber majority now shows little regard for core constitution...

Colorado’s Circular Firing Squad on the 2nd Amendment

By The Colorado Freedom Force Whether the decided-upon strategy of the anti-2nd Amendment legislators in Colorado is “Throw everything up against the wall and see what sticks”, or just “divide and conquer”, their numerous attempts at whittling away at the 2nd Amendment can be hard to keep up with. From a straightforward “assault weapons” ban to imposing more fees or adding an 11% excise tax to guns and ammunition, Colorado’s Democrats have formed a circular firing squad around this fundamental right. You can learn about all seven active bills, use online forms to contact your representatives or read the entirety of a bill through the Colorado Freedom Force website. They’re just using a different tool to control water now

By GREG WALCHER | GregWalcher.com There are at least 25 different types of wrenches commonly found in toolboxes. There are box-end, open-end, combination, and crescent wrenches. For particular jobs, one might reach for a lug wrench, basin wrench, oil filter wrench, or an impact, flare-nut, strap, chain, or torque wrench. Like most people, I also have socket wrenches, Allen wrenches, and pipe wrenches.   My dad taught us that every job is easier with the right tools, but he also knew there were several ways to accomplish any task. If one wrench won’t work, you try a different wrench. That is exactly what environmental industry lawyers, and their government allies, are doing in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Sackett v. EPA. That is the case in which the Court finally decl...

Among the statistic most meant to mislead, you have the Unemployment Rate

Source: Critically Thinking Substack One of the most monitored of all U.S. statistics — and one frequently used for the most political gain — is the Unemployment Rate. It sounds simple enough (and actually should be) but when bureaucrats and politicians got their hands on it, it’s merely a shadow of itself. In his most recent work, John Droz Jr. takes a look at how deceptive the Unemployment Rate can be, falling in line with Mark Twain's theory on the subject of "lies, damned lies and statistics." Celebrating Leap Day: A Quirky Day in the Calendar

By Tori Ganahl | Rocky Mountain Voice Every four years, we indulge in an extra day on the calendar, February 29, fondly known as Leap Day. But why do we have this extra day, and what are some of the fascinating traditions associated with it? Let's dive into the curious world of Leap Day: Balancing Time and the Cosmos While our modern calendar comprises 365 days, Earth's orbit around the sun actually takes approximately 365.2421 days. To align our calendars with astronomical reality, we insert an additional day every four years. Leap Day Through History Leap Day isn't a recent invention; ancient calendars, including those of the Hebrew, Chinese, and Buddhist traditions, employed leap months to reconcile lunar and solar cycles. Julius Caesar, inspired by the Egyptian solar cal...

Stop the Bleed program a means to protect our children

By Jacob Clay | Guest Columnist As a parent and school administrator, I am deeply concerned about an issue that threatens the safety of our most precious gifts: Our children. While it is every community's hope that tragic events never impact our schools, we must do all we can to prepare and shield our kids. This is a matter of vital importance, one that crosses partisan lines and any stances on school security. There is one simple safety measure that could be the difference between life or death.  Recent horrific incidents across the country remind us that blood loss is the leading cause of death in mass casualty situations, accounting for many preventable fatalities. Through basic medical training and access to essential supplies, how many lives could have been saved? I a...

What does ‘Do Better Denver’ say about all of us, and the media?

By Cory Gaines | Guest Columnist I was recently introduced to a Twitter account called “Do Better Denver,” after reading about it in a Westword article. If you are like me and don't live in Denver (or on Twitter), you may not be aware of who they are, but it's not hard to describe. It's a social media account that posts unflinching pictures of homeless people around Denver along with sharing some items that would fall more comfortably into the category of news, e.g. sharing the amount Denver has spent on public safety this year. I think that reasonable arguments could be made either way about the value of pictures of homeless people and encampments in bringing to light the issue and/or in trying to fix it. I will leave it to you to come to your own conclusions there. I'm not going...

Protect Kids Colorado launches to protect kids, strengthen families through citizens ballot initiatives

By Erin Lee | Guest Columnist Colorado is one of 24 states to have a Citizens Ballot Initiative process. Coloradans, that means “We the People” have a process by which to make law. Article V, Section II, Item 2.0, of the Colorado Constitution clearly lays out the people’s process by stating: “The first power hereby reserved by the people is the initiative…” The FIRST power.  The United States and Colorado Constitutions were founded on the principles of individual rights and “We The People” maintaining those fundamental and inalienable rights. It’s the reason the American experiment has been and can continue to be the most successful Constitutional Republic in the world.   As Coloradans are becoming increasingly aware, our state leadership is off the rails. The laws co...
