Panel of Colorado lawmakers schedule meeting amid talk of property tax compromise, special session

By Deborah Grigsby | Colorado Politics A panel of Colorado lawmakers tasked with crafting long-term property tax policy is meeting on Monday, potentially laying down the groundwork for a special session amid speculation that parties are negotiating a potential compromise that would pull two initiatives from the November ballot in exchange for deeper reductions to people's tax liabilities. The agenda posted on the state’s legislative website stated that the 19-member Commission on Property Tax will convene to discuss potential changes to legislation that Democrats and Republicans passed just this last session. That measure, the product of a deal reached by Democrats and Republicans, reduced commercial property tax assessment rates and decreased property valuations. The pr...

Democrat Jillaire McMillan will face Republican Dan Woog in HD19 general election

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics A vacancy committee has selected Jillaire McMillan as the new Democratic candidate for the House District 19 election after the incumbent candidate, Rep. Jennifer Parenti, announced she was dropping out of the race last month.  McMillan, a small business owner, will face former state Rep. Dan Woog in the November election. “I’m a first-time candidate who’s been considering public office for a long time," said McMillan. "While I believe my combination of public service, community relationships, and nonpartisan advocacy have uniquely prepared me to be the candidate and legislator HD19 needs, I don’t think anything can really prepare you for the experience of being a candidate. This condensed process packed so much work and emotion into a shor...

In continuing saga, judge lifts order, allowing adversaries possible vote to remove GOP chair; Dueling meetings might exist again

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics A district court judge on Tuesday paved the way for a vote to remove Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams by lifting a temporary restraining order that blocked a group of Colorado Republicans from holding a meeting to consider whether to fire the party boss. Following an hour-long virtual hearing held earlier the same day, Arapahoe County District Court Judge Thomas W. Henderson reversed an order he issued last month that prohibited Williams' critics from convening a meeting, writing that the court lacked jurisdiction in the internal party dispute. In response to Henderson's new order, the Republicans who have been attempting to oust Williams all summer almost immediately scheduled a meeting on Aug. 24 at a church in Brigh...

How long could the ballot be? Nine propositions could make ballot, eight others missed ballot

By Marissa Ventrelli | Colorado Politics The deadline for submitting signatures for ballot measures in Colorado was Aug. 5. To qualify for the November ballot, a measure must receive signatures equal to at least 5% of the total votes cast for all Secretary of State candidates in the last election. This year, that's 124,238.  Measures that propose changes to the state Constitution must meet those same requirements and receive signatures from at least 2% of the total registered electors in each of Colorado's 35 Senate districts. Two emerge to be selected by vacancy committee to appear on ballot as Democratic candidate for HD19

By Marissa Ventrelli  | Colorado Politics A vacancy committee will meet on Thursday to select a candidate to replace Rep. Jennifer Parenti, D-Erie, in the House District 19 election. Parenti announced she was dropping out of the race last month.  In a letter announcing her departure, Parenti cited the prevalence of "personal agendas and special interests" in the legislature, which she said made it hard for her to maintain her sense of integrity.  Two candidates, Anil Pesaramelli and James Reed, are now vying to represent the Democratic Party in the November election. Pesaramelli, a software engineer at Kaiser Permanente, previously ran for the Boulder Valley School District School Board. Reed, an IT professional, also has experience on the board, having served ...

Families of officers lost in the line of duty would get $1M benefit if ‘Back The Blue’ initiative passes

By Deborah Grigsby | Colorado Politics Proponents of a measure that would create a $1 million death benefit for the families of officers killed in the line of duty submitted 199,067 signatures to the office of the Secretary of State in hopes of garnering a place on the November ballot. Initiative 157, also known as the “Back The Blue” initiative would require the state to appropriate $350 million in funds already collected from taxpayers to the newly created Peace Officer Training and Support Fund within the Colorado Department of Public Safety. The funding would not only enhance the recruiting, training, retention and compensation of law enforcement and peace officers across the state, but would also provide a death benefit of $1 million to surviving spouses, children, or estate ...

Senate approves bill to give Colorado two more federal judges

By Michael Karlik | Colorado Politics The U.S. Senate unanimously approved a bill on Thursday that would add judgeships to Colorado's federal trial court for the first time in 40 years. The bipartisan JUDGES Act would expand the size of district courts across the country in two-year increments over the next decade. Colorado's U.S. District Court currently has seven presidentially appointed judges, and the number under the bill would increase to nine by 2033. The Judicial Conference of the United States, which is the governing body for the federal courts, has repeatedly recommended Congress give two additional judgeships to Colorado based on caseloads. Data from 2022 showed 558 cases filed per judge on Colorado's federal trial court, a higher number than neighbo...

Two GOP county chairs – Pallozzi, Watkins – ask judge to reverse order blocking vote to remove Dave Williams as state chair

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Feuding Colorado Republicans were back in court this week as the county party officers who have been trying to oust state GOP Chairman Dave Williams asked a judge to reverse an earlier order that prohibited Williams' critics from convening a meeting to vote on the question. El Paso County Republican Vice Chairman Todd Watkins and Jefferson County Republican Chairwoman Nancy Pallozzi filed a motion late Tuesday in Arapahoe County District Court asking Judge Thomas W. Henderson to reconsider the temporary restraining order he issued Friday that blocked a meeting of the party's state central committee that Watkins had earlier called for the following day. In their motion, Watkins and Pallozzi said that the judge granted the ord...

Ballot initiative aims to create new vet professional associate role to address shortage

By Deborah Grigsby | Colorado Politics Proponents of a statutory initiative that would create a new position called “veterinary professional associate” (VPA) submitted just under 200,000 signatures to the Colorado Secretary of State on Monday. Initiative 145 would establish a new mid-level veterinary practitioner career pathway as a solution to a veterinary workforce shortage. “Getting 200,000 signatures in just two months really reflects how many people in Colorado are struggling to access veterinary care and excited about an opportunity to expand the veterinary workforce to include more highly-trained professionals who can provide high-quality, affordable care,” Vet Care Coalition Board Chair Ali Mickelson said. ‘Embarrassing to watch’: Rep. Boebert rips ‘infighting,’ calls on Dave Williams to support GOP candidates or be removed

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert on Friday called on Colorado Republican Party Chairman Dave Williams to publicly demonstrate that the state GOP is supporting candidates up and down the ballot or potentially face removal from office. Calling recent infighting within the state GOP "embarrassing to watch," Boebert said in a post on social media that Colorado Republicans risk missing a "golden opportunity" to flip seats in November because rival party factions have been obsessed with duking it out with each other. "The past month of public dissension and infighting in the Colorado Republican Party has been embarrassing to watch as we have a golden opportunity this November to flip seats at every level of government," Boebert said in a post on Facebook. ...
