‘Have you seen me?’: Republican billboard notes absence of 8th District Democrat Yadira Caraveo from DNC

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics The House Republicans' campaign arm wants people flocking to the Democratic National Convention to know that a handful of vulnerable Democratic incumbents — including U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo — won't be on hand this week in Chicago. Caraveo, a Thornton pediatrician seeking reelection in Colorado's battleground 8th Congressional District, is among five House Democrats targeted with a mobile billboard hired to circle the convention, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee told Colorado Politics. "Have you seen me?" says the electronic billboard, alongside photographs of Vice President Kamala Harris and the five Democrats labeled "Harris enablers" by the NRCC. Judge tosses Colorado GOP’s bid to halt meeting to remove party chairman Dave Williams

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Colorado Republicans who want to depose state party chairman Dave Williams can proceed with a meeting called for that purpose, a district court judge ruled late Friday. Arapahoe County District Court Judge Thomas W. Henderson said in a five-page order that the court lacks jurisdiction to decide the party's internal dispute over attempts to oust its elected leaders, including Williams, citing Colorado law and prior court rulings. In response, El Paso County Vice Chair Todd Watkins told Colorado Politics that organizers plan to move ahead with a meeting scheduled for Aug. 24 at a church in Brighton, where Williams' detractors plan to vote on whether to replace Williams and his lieutenants, state Vice Chair Hope Sheppelman and party Secr...

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and her Democratic challenger Trisha Calvarese are set to face off in a debate on business and economic issues on Sept. 3 in Roxborough Park. The lunchtime debate is so far the only meet-up scheduled between the two major party candidates running in Colorado's 4th Congressional District, which covers Douglas County, parts of Larimer and Weld Counties, and the Eastern Plains. Boebert and Calvarese both emerged from crowded primaries for the seat formerly represented by Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, who resigned in March. Republican Greg Lopez defeated Calvarese in a June special election to serve out the remainder of Buck's term. READ THE FULL STORY AT COLORADO POLITICS

‘Concerned Citizens’ charge that Elbert Co. commissioners violated open meetings law on contracts

By Deborah Grigsby | Colorado Politics A group of Elbert County residents was hoping to resolve several lingering questions about how County Manager Shawn Fletcher and longtime County Attorney Bart Greer landed hefty new employment contracts without providing public notice—and outside of a public meeting. Known collectively as “Concerned Citizens,” Elbert County residents Kenneth Cardwell, Jill Duvall, Jim Duvall, Chris Hatton, Nic Meyer, Robert Rowland and Bob Ware have retained the law firm of Zansberg Beylkin, LLC to compel County Commissioners Chris Richardson, Dallas Schroeder and Grant Thayer to “formally acknowledge” that the two contracted the county entered into with Fletcher and Greer are “legally invalid” because they were were approved outside of a public meeting.  ...

Colorado Rep. Joe Neguse, Sen. Michael Bennet lead delegation call for IRS not to tax TABOR refunds

By Ernest Luning | Colorado Politics Colorado's congressional delegation on Wednesday once again urged the Internal Revenue Service not to treat refunds issued under the state's Taxpayer's Bill of Rights as taxable income. In a letter led by U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet and Assistant House Minority Leader Joe Neguse, every member of the state's delegation asked IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel to stick with the approach the agency has taken for more than three decades, since voters approved the revenue-limiting state constitutional amendment known widely as TABOR. The lawmakers said they are concerned the IRS could be considering treating refunds issued this year by the state — $800 for individual filers and $1,500 for joint filers — as taxable income, reversing an interpretation the age...

Faulting new law, after daughter transitions to boy, parents sue Colorado, Brighton school district

By Thelma Grimes | Colorado Politics A Brighton couple is suing the state of Colorado, alleging that a law dealing with transgender identity violates parents’ constitutional rights and that their daughter, with the encouragement of a school district counselor, transitioned to a boy in secret.  The couple filed the Aug. 7 lawsuit against the Department of Education, and the 27J School District in Brighton. The suit seeks to challenge the constitutionality of House Bill 1039, claiming it violates parents’ rights as outlined in the First and 14th Amendments of the American Constitution. The Colorado law requires all public schools to use a child’s “preferred name,” subjecting schools to discrimination claims with the state's Civil Rights Commission if they refused if t...

In response to likely anti-gun Harris presidency and shooting of Trump, firearm sales jump

By Paul Bedard | Washington Examiner, via Colorado Politics Gun sales turned up for the first time in nearly a year after last month’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump and promises of firearm bans from Vice President Kamala Harris following her anointment as the Democratic presidential nominee. While still high historically, sales month over month had slowed until the shooting and elevation of Harris, who selected liberal gun-grabber Tim Walz, the Minnesota governor, as her running mate on Tuesday. Gun sellers told Secrets that the combo has led to a sales spike and raised fears among owners. “Business picked up a few percentage points at the end of July into early August, and I think we can thank Kamala Harris and the Democrat Par...
