Summit Co. student, staff information may have been compromised in third-party data breach

By Christa Swanson | CBS Colorado In a release Thursday, officials with the Summit County School District announced that a data breach may have exposed sensitive information affecting students and staff. The district said they were notified on Jan. 7 that a third-party vendor experienced a data breach between Dec. 19 and Dec. 28. The company, PowerSchool Group LLC, said the compromised login credentials may have exposed information including student names, social security numbers, addresses, medical details, and staff contact information. PowerSchool said the breach has been contained and they are working with cybersecurity experts to investigate it. School district officials said they are continuing to monitor the situation. Jefferson Co. schools dismisses Wheat Ridge H.S. students early Friday after bomb threat

By Christa Swanson | CBS Colorado According to the Wheat Ridge Police Department, Jeffco Public Schools is dismissing Wheat Ridge High School students early Friday due to a bomb threat. Jeffco Schools officials said they conducted an early dismissal at 11:15 a.m. as a precaution. They said the school was made aware of a threat made by a student directed at the school. Authorities advised parents that there is construction along West 32nd Avenue right outside of the high school and asked that they drive up Holland Street from West 38th Avenue to pick up students. Enrollment slipping in Colorado’s K-12 public schools, with total of 881,065

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado Fewer students are enrolled in public schools across Colorado, according to data from the state's October 2024 student count released by the Colorado Department of Education. The data shows a slight decline in Pre-K through 12 student enrollment with a total of 881,065 students. That's a decrease of 0.1% compared to October 2023. Education officials say the enrollment trend in Colorado mirrors larger national declines in student enrollment. Colorado's enrollment numbers have steadily decreased over the last five years, except for a bump in enrollment post-pandemic in 2021. Aurora officials to close troubled ‘The Edge’ apartments where TdA problems began

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado The City of Aurora is moving forward with plans to close The Edge at Lowry apartment complex at 12th and Dallas. Last week, a municipal judge granted an emergency order to close the complex. The property has been deemed a criminal nuisance due to persistent violent incidents. The emergency order says the complex is an "immediate threat to public safety." Aurora City Attorney Pete Schulte says a full closure of the property is expected by mid-February. The diner-type eatery off Exit 254 opened in the 1950s and became known to travelers on Interstate 25 over the decades as a great place to get large cinnamon rolls. Teen pleads guilty to second degree murder in shooting at Longmont car rally

By Christa Swanson | CBS Colorado A teen charged in a fatal shooting at a car rally in Longmont pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Friday. Christian Mendoza, 17, was charged as an adult after he fatally shot 16-year-old Robert Maldonado in the Longmont Hobby Lobby parking lot in March 2024. Officials said an altercation at the car rally between Mendoza and Maldonado turned physical. When Maldonado turned to head back towards the vehicle he arrived in, Mendoza shot him in the back right side. Maldonado fled the rally in his vehicle and crashed nearby. DA George Brauchler launches new 23rd Judicial District with tough-on-crime approach

For decades, the 18th Judicial District has encompassed Arapahoe, Douglas, Elbert and Lincoln counties. As those communities grew, the district became the largest in the state. A political divide also emerged between left-leaning Arapahoe County and the other conservative communities. In 2020, a bipartisan effort in the state legislature split the district, leaving only Arapahoe County in the 18th Judicial District and creating a new district for the remaining counties, the state's 23rd. Horse rescued after falling into icy pond in Northern Colorado

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado Fire crews with Loveland Fire Authority rescued a horse that had fallen into an icy pond in Northern Colorado. Crews rushed to the pond on South County Road 13 on Thursday where a horse found a way through the fence and onto a frozen pond.  Firefighters said the pond could not support the horse's weight and ended up in the icy waters in the middle of the pond. The horse could not get back to shore.  Firefighters donned ice rescue suits and broke apart the ice using axes and sledgehammers.
