‘Wellington is killing its residents’: Some say water bills have increased to more than $1,000 a month

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Many residents in a small but growing town in northern Colorado are accusing the town of increasing water bill rates to levels that are unaffordable, leaving many to wonder if there is a system error while others are contemplating moving. Wellington, a town of nearly 12,000 people, is at the center of the dispute. The town, which is located just north of Fort Collins, has had issues with its water system for many years now. CBS News Colorado has covered issues from the water quality to the smell and even to the price, since 2016. The town has seen steady growth in recent years, some describing it as a "commuter town" in which many new residents purchased their homes there in order to have more affordable housing while still working in other major co...

Dog lover marshals animal welfare community to save four-legged friends

By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado The high cost of living in Colorado is impacting not only families but their beloved pets. Dog surrenders are up and adoptions are down at shelters across the state and the cost of pet care is one of the many reasons.     According to the National Canine Advocacy Group, about 55,000 dogs were brought into Colorado shelters last year -- nearly 20,000 of them were surrendered by their owners. Not only are shelters taking in more dogs, but they're also putting down more dogs; 5,000 dogs were euthanized last year in Colorado. While many shelters have "no-kill" policies, they don't cover dogs that are unhealthy or unsafe. Elizabeth Coalson, founder of the nonprofit National Canine Advocacy Group, says many of the dogs that were euthanized ...

Mothers’ non-profit can’t have a bake sale in Golden without permit

By Karen Morfitt | CBS Colorado A group of moms raising money for charity has found themselves in a conflict with the City of Golden. The group raises money in the name of the mothers' daughters who died several years ago. As a nonprofit, they offered baked goods in exchange for donations. They set up outside the Golden Fine Arts Festival every year. This year, they received a notice stating that without the required license, they would be ticketed. The city says the license is required to ensure equity for all the different groups that participate each year. READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Euthanasia at area animal shelters is up by double digits as thousands of Coloradans surrender their dogs

By Shaun Boyd | CBS Colorado Colorado's animal shelters have reached a tipping point. Dogs that once were adopted within days are now waiting weeks or months and some never make it out. While many shelters have "no-kill" policies, those policies don't apply to dogs that are unhealthy or unsafe. According to the National Canine Advocacy Group, the six largest shelters along the Front Range took in just over 42,000 dogs last year and euthanized nearly 5,000 of them; a 24% increase over 2022. Now, the state's oldest shelter is turning some dogs away. The Dumb Friends League has long billed itself as a "socially conscious shelter," accepting all unwanted animals - but as dog surrenders soar and adoptions fall, Dumb Friends is suspending its open door policy. Demonstrators denied entry to Douglas County PrideFest, say it shows event was not inclusive

By Olivia Young | CBS Colorado Douglas County PrideFest 2024 was decidedly calmer than last year's event in Colorado. "Everyone I've talked to has said the vibe is significantly more relaxed," said Anya Zavadil, president of Douglas County Pride.  In 2023, PrideFest had to deal with a number of different attacks. Someone vandalized the fairgrounds and several cars, writing the word "groomer." The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says a suspect was never identified and that case was closed. If Alexander Mountain fire continues, evacuated Northern Colorado farmers say their livelihood is in jeopardy

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado A team of local farmers west of Loveland say the Alexander Mountain Fire could potentially ruin their source of income if it continues to grow to the east.  Those with the Eden Valley farm say they are under mandatory evacuation, and that has rid of their ability to work on their produce or harvest.  The farm is located only about a mile or two away from the fire, says Isaac Livingood, a manager of the team's farmers market outreach.  The group had just finished harvesting their crop for the week when the fire began. They gathered personal items quickly and loaded their refrigerated truck with the produce they had and headed east.  READ THE FULL STORY AT CBS COLORADO

Stone Canyon Fire forces 600 animals to be evacuated from Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado The Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center had to act quickly on Tuesday when the Stone Canyon Fire grew close to its facility. Staff saw the flames peaking over the ridge located directly behind the center and decided to activate the emergency evacuation plan.  They had nearly 600 injured or orphaned animals living at the center including a raccoon, squirrel, songbirds, geese, ducks and bunnies. It took staff about an hour to get them all wrangled up and on their way to live at other centers.  The animals went to private animal rehabilitators until Thursday morning when they were given the all-clear to return to the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. They began with a goose that had surgery on Monday, and the baby bunnies because the...

By Brian Maass | CBS Colorado At a special meeting Tuesday night, trustees for the Town of Lakeside voted to unanimously fire their police chief, Robert Gordanier, who had also served as mayor and fire chief and had worked for the town since 1967. The town also announced that Gordanier's daughter, Brenda Hamilton, who was town clerk but had also been indicted along with her father, had agreed to resign from her position.   "We have good reason to terminate," said Henry Schueller, one of the five trustees who voted to fire Gordanier.
