Aurora City Council goes virtual, making changes to rules for public comment

By Tori Mason | CBS Colorado The Aurora City Council voted to move forward with a resolution that would change the rules for public comment after recent meetings have been interrupted by protesters supporting the family of Kilyn Lewis, an unarmed Black man shot and killed by Aurora police.  On Monday, community members demanded justice for Lewis at the great lawn outside the Aurora Municipal Center. The rally took place ahead of a virtual city council meeting that many feel was strategically shifted to avoid public confrontation. King Soopers shooter Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa found guilty of murdering 10 in Boulder

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado Jurors reached a verdict Monday afternoon in the Boulder grocery store shooting trial. The jury found Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa guilty of shooting and killing 10 people at the South Table Mesa King Soopers on March 22, 2021, in addition to guilty verdicts on dozens of other charges.  Jurors had to determine whether Alissa, the gunman who admitted to the shooting, was legally sane at the time of the attack. In addition to the guilty verdict on 10 counts of first-degree murder, the jury also found the gunman guilty on 38 counts of attempted first-degree murder, guilty of one count of assault in the first degree and guilty on six counts of possession of a large-capacity magazine during the commission of a felony.  READ THE FULL STOR...

By CBS 11 News Colorado's governor signed four gun control bills Friday, following the lead of other states struggling to confront a nationwide surge in violent crime and mass shootings, despite a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that expanded Second Amendment rights. Before the ink was even dry on Gov. Jared Polis' signature, gun rights groups sued to reverse two of the measures: raising the buying age for any gun from 18 to 21, and establishing a three-day waiting period between the purchase and receipt of a gun. "I thought the Fed was going to be a little bit more conservative and do a 0.25 percentage cut. However, the 0.5 is where we're at. The cost of paying for insurance coverage on a vehicle has soared since 2020, especially in Colorado, which is now one of the worst states in the country in terms of cost. In 2023, rates jumped an average of 23%, with the pace continuing this year. Rates are up another 16% in 2024 and experts say it could top out at 22% before the end of the year. Denver police investigate shooting on RTD bus; one has non-life threatening injury

By Jennifer McRae | CBS Colorado Police in Denver investigated a shooting on an RTD bus on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the shooting happened on a bus near 15th and Tremont.  One victim was located and self-transported to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury. Conifer councilman charged in altercation in which teen was allegedly shot in face

By Austen Erblat, Alan Gionet | CBS Colorado Brent Metz, the Colorado town councilman accused of shooting a 17-year-old boy in the face last week, has been formally charged. Metz is accused of shooting the teen who, along with his friend, say they hopped a fence to knock on a Conifer property owner's door to get permission to take high school homecoming photos. When it appeared no one was home, they went back to their car on the side of the road to write a note for the property owner. But a renewed push against the app gained momentum in Congress earlier this year, as lawmakers approved a foreign aid package that included provisions requiring it to be sold or be banned from U.S. app stores. Colorado State embarks on $137 million renovation project on the Clark Building

By Dillon Thomas | CBS Colorado Colorado State University has begun a $137 million project to renovate and replace two-thirds of its most utilized educational space. "Clark," named after Andrew G. Clark, is made up of three wings. Built in the 1960s, the "A-wing" and "C-wing" have been connected by the "B-wing" bridge of offices for decades. Aside from minor updates, the facilities have largely remained the same since initial construction. But, that's now changing for two-thirds of the facility.  Clark A will undergo a major renovation after the demolition and replacement of Clark B is completed. Mayor Mike Johnston unveiled his proposed 2025 budget on Thursday, and as a result of that dip in it includes substantial cuts to programs that he's passionate about.   Nicole Doheny, the chief financial officer for the City and County of Denver, says cities like Los Angeles and Chicago are also facing similar challenges. "Denver is not immune to these factors. Here in Denver what these trends mean for us is that our revenue growth for 2025 is projected at 1.1%.
