White smoke was seen from the Vatican at approximately 6:08 p.m. Rome time, signaling that the Cardinals have elected a new pope of the Catholic Church. The chiming of the Vatican’s church bells confirmed for the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square that a new successor to the See of St. Peter the Apostle has indeed been chosen.
