Education Department accelerates student loan debt cancellation plan

By Breccan F. Thies, Washington Examiner SOURCE: Gazette The Biden administration announced Friday morning that it is expanding and accelerating its income-driven student loan forgiveness plan. Borrowers who originally took out loans of $12,000 or less and have made at least 10 years of payments will be eligible for debt cancellation as early as next month under the Saving on a Valuable Education Plan. “Beyond being the most affordable student loan repayment plan ever available, the Biden-Harris Administration designed the SAVE Plan to put community college students and other low-balance borrowers on a faster track to debt forgiveness than ever before,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a press release. “With lower monthly payments, protection from runaway ...

Inflation rises slightly to 1% in December in producer price index

By Zachary Halaschak, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: The Gazette Wholesale inflation, as measured by the producer price index, ticked up slightly to 1% for the year ending in December as the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates high. The new numbers were released on Friday by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The December increase came after a 0.8% annual increase the month before. Colorado First Amendment attorney weighs in on the legalities of protest in government buildings

By Marissa Ventrelli | SOURCE: Colorado Politics Political protests have happened in America since before it officially became a country. Many Americans point to the Constitution's First Amendment as a defining principle. The Founding Fathers specifically forbid Congress from "abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." However, as with just about any rule, there are exceptions. In light of recent protests at the Capitol in Denver, Colorado Politics spoke with First Amendment attorney Mike Beylkin of Zansberg Law to find out what protections protestors have inside the building and the potential legal implications that could lead to being removed from the premises. W...

Colorado lawmakers grill officials over wolf release communication failures

Ranchers' trust destroyed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife's wolf release By Marianne Goodland  | SOURCE: COLORADO POLITICS Lawmakers grilled officials from the Department of Natural Resources and Colorado Parks and Wildlife, who found themselves on the hot seat on Wednesday at the state Capitol, where policymakers described communication failures and problems tied to the release of wolves in Grand and Summit counties last month. The lawmakers said the state mishandled communications over the release and added that destroyed trust with ranchers and landowners. They added those ranchers and landers are now saying they will no longer work with the agency on conservation issues. Dan Gibbs, chief of the Department of Natural Resources, apologized for the communication failures. ...

Governor Polis Boasts About Leading the Nation in Psychedelics, Continuing to Ignore Potential Risks

SOURCE: thelobby-co.com During his recent State of the State address, Governor Jared Polis proudly declared that Colorado is once again leading the nation, this time in the realm of psychedelic drugs. Drawing parallels to Colorado's pioneering role in the legalization of marijuana, Polis celebrated the emerging psychedelic reform movement and its potential benefits. Polis highlighted Colorado's distinction as the first state to legalize recreational cannabis, a move that has been replicated by other states and countries seeking to emulate the state's perceived success. Now, because of voters, Colorado has become the first state to legalize the production, possession, and use of substances like psilocybin, ibogaine, mescaline, and DMT, through a voter-approved initiative in 202...

Poll: Democrats would rather see Michelle Obama in the White House than Biden

By Brett Rowland | The Center Square, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: The Gazette (The Center Square) – If Democrats had a magic wand, they'd put Michelle Obama in the White House.  The former first lady has more political star power than incumbent President Joe Biden and other famous and not-so-famous Democrats ahead of the November election, according to The Center Square Voters' Voice Poll, conducted Jan. 2-4. The poll, conducted with Noble Predictive Insights, found that if Democrats and Democrat-leaning likely voters could wave a magic wand, 24% would pick Michelle Obama. The former first lady was followed by Biden (20%), U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (12%), someone else (9%), U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg (9%), former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clin...

COLUMN: Meet Colorado’s new Republican establishment | Jimmy Sengenberger

By Jimmy Sengenberger | SOURCE: Gazette Move over, old guard Republican Establishment. There’s a new Establishment sheriff in town. This week, Colorado GOP Chairman Dave Williams used the party’s official email account to declare his bid for the 5th Congressional District seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn. He embedded his campaign press release while pledging to remain chairman — raising eyebrows given the chair’s job is to elect Republican candidates, including ensuring fairness in the primaries. Let’s be clear: Irrespective of party, clinging to leadership while using your position as a political booster seat is as ethical as selling ice to an Eskimo. Williams refuses the same courtesy to other congressional candidates, punting the decision to the party’s executive...

No Labels has 13 contenders for ticket against Biden and Trump

By Julia Johnson, Washington Examiner | SOURCE: Gazette No Labels, the centrist organization plotting a potential 2024 presidential ticket, has 13 possible candidates to challenge a rematch of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. The group is expected to determine sometime after March 15 whether to put forward a unity ticket. If Trump appears to be the likely Republican nominee, No Labels is most inclined to announce its choice for a president and vice president alternative, according to the group. No Labels has found that a potential ticket with a Republican presidential nominee coupled with a Democratic vice presidential nominee performs better than the opposite scenario. The organization's founder and CEO, Nancy Jacobson, and chief strategi...

EDITORIAL: Yes to tax cuts, no to pipe dreams

By The Gazette Editorial Board | SOURCE: The Gazette Even for a State of the State address, Gov. Jared Polis did plenty of bragging. In his sixth such speech Thursday, he touted his administration’s strides on preschool and public ed; health care; climate change; the crime fight; affordable housing, even the introduction of gray wolves. It was as if he were seeking to burnish his credentials for a run for higher office — if that wasn’t apparent from his repeated references to President John F. Kennedy. Let’s hope the higher office he lands doesn’t turn out to be secretary of transportation — should the White House go to someone else. Sinking untold billions of dollars into passenger rail service — an idea that leaves him aglow — would do as little to get most of the nation from Po...

Polis looks more to the past than the future during his 2024 State of the State Address

SOURCE: thelobby-co.com Governor Jared Polis delivered his State of the State address to the Colorado Legislature, but critics argue that his speech was long on big deals and short on details. As a governor deep into his second term, the annual address is typically a mix of celebrating accomplishments and outlining future plans. However, Governor Polis seemed more focused on highlighting past victories than providing a clear roadmap for the future. Strange for a governor whose liberal party, though divided by vitriol and infighting, controls both chambers and all branches of government. Governor Polis shares his superficial vision for solving Colorado’s housing shortage. He omits the many bills being introduced that included government mandates. Polis calls housing a civil ...
